Max & Ruby: Parents Are Alive

C.M. Paulson
If you've ever watch the children's cartoon Max & Ruby with your kids, you've probably wondered about the family dynamics for these bunnies. Max & Ruby are often seen with their beloved Grandma and friends including Louise, Valerie, and Roger. They do interact with other adults such as Ruby's Bunny Scout Leader and Mr. and Mrs. Huffington. And although there is a family portrait in the home showing Max & Ruby with their parents, we never, ever see Max & Ruby's parents in the show

An internet search shows rumors floating that Max & Ruby's parents were killed in an altercation with Farmer McGregor. But, if that were the case, why wouldn't Max & Ruby live with their Grandma? She certainly cares for them - would Max & Ruby's Grandma leave 7-year old Ruby and 3-year old Max to live on their own?

Of course not, and that's why Max & Ruby author Rosemary Wells sets the record straight in her interview with Nick Jr. As the author of highly-acclaimed children's books including Noisy Nora, Wells consistently encourages children to think outside-of-the box with amusing and compelling stories, with the goal of the television show being to highlight the ups and downs of sibling relationships.

So, what does this have to do with Max & Ruby's parents? Well, sometimes kids have to work things out on their own. Rosemary Wells tells Nick Jr. that "As in most other classic stories, we don't see Max & Ruby's parents. I believe that kids resolve their issues and conflicts differently when they are on their own."

Max & Ruby books certainly have a different style than most and a message that differs from today's "helicopter parenting" approach. For example, in Max Drives Away, Ruby tells Max that he must eat a decent breakfast, while he demands ice cream. Max decides to drive to Grandma's house and she gives him pistachio strawberry ice cream for breakfast. While this may not appeal to some parents' sense of good parenting, it allows kids to expand their imaginations (after all, Max & Ruby are bunnies - not kids!)

Dora explores on her own with a talking monkey. Franklin the turtle often explores the forest without his parents. The Backyardigans explore the world without any parental guidance. And Max & Ruby can solve their differences without Mom and Dad's input. Not a bad lesson for kids to learn these days.

My grandkids love this show. They do, however, wonder where Mom and Dad are. It is a
    little troubling for them.

    PARENTS CHARGED, GRANDMOTHER ARRESTED

EASTER ISLAND, SP; -- A grandmother is arrested and warrants were issued for her son & daughter-in-law after it was discovered the couple's two children were left alone to fend for themselves for an undetermined, but apparently lengthy, amount of time. The children, ages 7 and 3, were taken into protective custody after dialing 9-1-1 Thursday night. They were playing around with the phone when, for whatever reason, the emergency line was called.

Officers arrived at the home near Egg Blvd and discovered that no adults were present and that neither of the children had any idea how to contact their parents. Based on those facts the children were placed with CPS.
Police have yet to be able to contact or locate the parents. Grandma Rabbit, 52, who lives nearby the Rabbits family home claims that she does not know the whereabouts of her son, Roger, 26, and daughter-in-law, Jessica, 24, but was well aware that the children had been left unsupervised for some time, according to the criminal complaint filed by Easter Island police.

"They were just left unattended, and at that age, you can't do that. It's a violation
of the law. Grandma said she didn't think it was a big deal. She didn't understand
what the big deal was about," Easter Island Police Chief Peter Cottontail said.

Cottontail said Grandma Rabbit appeared to be remorseful and concerned.
Online records show she was released from the Chocolate County Correctional
Facility on $5,000 bond after her arrest on charges of endangering the welfare
of a child and recklessly endangering another person.

The Easter Island district judge's office told Channel 4 Action News reporter
Snuggle Bunny that a constable was searching for Roger & Jessica Rabbit on
Thursday afternoon. They may be in a pink Chevrolet Lumina, Cottontail said.

"We've gone by their residence. We've gone by other locations that we know they
frequent. We tried calling their cell phone number that we had. That phone is now disconnected," Cottontail said.

Nobody answered the door when Bunny went to the Rabbit house for a comment on Thursday. Mrs. Huffington, longtime neighbor of the Rabbits commented to Bunny, "The whole situation is just a shame. They seemed like such a nice family. We thought something strange was going on, but we weren't sure what. We never saw the parents and the kids never seemed to change clothes. The little boy was always in those same dirty overalls with a broken strap & striped shirt."

Reporter Snuggle Bunny also uncovered a police interview from 2 years ago with the Bunny Scout Leader of the 7-year-old child. Apparently she had concerns which were brought to her attention by, Louise, the best friend of the child. Chief Cottontail would not comment as to why nothing had been done at that time.

Thank you to some of you for pointing out that the show is a cartoon. I guess you think that some of us hadn't noticed or that we feel that all shows must be realistic as well as moralistic. Duh... so like, yeah, the aprents are absent, but like, duh, it's a kid's show. I think most of us understand the difference between fact and fiction, and that Max and Ruby is, uhhh, fiction. Yes, talking bunnies - we get it. But at the same time, when 7-year-old Ruby is shopping because Max's trousers are torn and dirty, how can someone watching (children included) not ask why it is up to her to shop for her brother or be in charge of his basic needs. If it is not meant to be realsitic, then put them in unrealistic situations, like finding magical items or rescuing baby jaguars. Or give them age-appropriate tasks to solve. Don't have them imitate realistic adult behaviour and responsibilities like providing for a child's basic needs. Rosemary Wells has made a weak choice in

The difference with shows like Dora and the Backyardigans is I firmly believe that most of it is their imanginations. I would never allow my children to wander off alone or to take care of each other like that. My 10 year old son is not required to make sure his 5 year old and 3 year old brothers have breakfast, take baths, or have to take them out on his outings. I understand that kids need to be able to resolve their own conflicts with one another, and for the most part, my husband and I allow our children to work out their own issues with one another. But at the same time, especially my youngest son, they dont always have the proper ways of dealing with issues. It is a parents job to teach those things. You always see the Grandma there, and she is a typical grandparent. Letting the kids pretty much do what they want. Who cares about giving a kid ice cream for breakfast? Parents do, but grandparents really dont. Who allows for their 7 year old to bake without supervision or their 3 y

I f'n hate Max he's so annoying. I wonder why Ruby doesn't knock him out.."fire truck.. fire truck!" F off Max!

You never see Max and Ruby's parents because in order to make ends meet they are always upstairs filming internet bunny porn with their webcams. How else could they afford that two story house, Ruby's bunny scout dues or all that candy she has to sell? What you all don't know is that Granny Bunny is fighting for custody but still had to complete her community service for her carrot moonshine arrest first. This weak economy is forcing people to do shameful things to make money. With littl adult supervision, its no wonder Ruby is practically throwing herself at Roger evertime he comes around. She'll be at a bunny brothel before she's 16 at this rate.

This cartoon is okay at times for my children to watch.. yes my daughter asks all the time if she will have to take care of her brother like ruby does i explain no mommy and daddies do that stuff.. so at times she thinks she can be ruby and be bossy and take care of her brother. i correct her right away.. also the thing of cooking and leaving without a parent i let them no that those things are not for young children to do. Moms and dads walk with them to the store and they cook for them its too dangerous. Im just saying some parts are not good.. but i agree with others that its a cartoon and parents that are always there and interacting with the kids with the educational shows then it should be fine.. you no matter what teach your children right from wrong no cartoon does that.

  • Max is 3 and.... 12/20/2010

...Ruby is ok with him leaving the house to go to the market to get groceries? I won't allow my 3 year old daughter and 4 year old son to go out the front door without my husband and I being within 5 ft of them! Other than situations like that, I think the show is cute! Max and Ruby....booo beee dooo beee dooo...Ruby and Max!

Ok, so i am not trying to say this show is terrible and all, but with the Backyardigans they are in their backyard. When they are out exploring, i think its really just their imagination because suddenly their backyard shows up again at the end of the show. Ruby has to kind of be a parent in this show and that kind of annoys me. thats all.
