Maximize Firefox Browsing Speed and Reduce Loading Times

Paul Cabrera
There are a handful of reasons to choose Firefox over the other internet browsers. Whether it be security, speed, or customization, Firefox seems to have it all. In this tutorial I will tell you how to even further improve the speed of Firefox. More experienced people maybe used to utilizing Firefox's configuration but anyone from a newcomer to a vet will be able to use this guide. These tips and tricks will get Firefox blazing fast. By modifying some features, such as the way Firefox utilizes cache, you can drastically speed up page load speed. There is also a way to solve that memory hogging problem that most Firefox users seem to be burdened with. Even if you have never touched your configuration file, don't be afraid! Follow these instructions step by step and take your time. It's simple to revert to the original settings if need be, just remember to right down your default values. Now for what we've been waiting for, the long awaited tweaks:

Minimize the amount of RAM that Firefox needs for cache:

1. Go to your URL bar and type in about:config
2. Press CTRL+F on your keyboard and look for browser.sessionhisoty.max_total_viewer
3. Change this value into 0

Accelerate the speed of page loading:

1. Go to your URL bar and type in about:config

2. Press CTRL+F on your keyboard. Look for and change the following entries:
Change "network.http.pipelining" and "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Change "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 10, this will make it so that firefox will make 10 requests at a time. You may change the value to a higher amount to see if your computer can benefit.

3. Use your mouse and right-click anywhere within the firefox window and select new > integer. You will name this new integer "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and make the value of this 0.

The value that you have just set is the waiting time of the browser. The browser will wait for the set amount of time before it acts on information. Through this feature you will notice a much faster page loading time.
Additionally, to accelerate Firefox to an even higher extent, you can add the following options into your about:config.

Find network.dns.disableIPv6 and set it to false
Find content.notify.backoffcount and set the value to 5
Find plugin.expose_full_path and set it to true
Find ui.submenudelay and set the value to 0

If you cannot find one of the above, you can right-click > new > integer or string in order to create it.

This last trick will make Firefox go down to ten MB of RAM usage while it is minimized:

1. Go to your URL bar and type in about:config
2. Right click within the Firefox window and go to New > Boolean.
3. Type in config.trim_on_minimize in the window that pops up and press enter.
4. Select the True option and press enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

Enjoy your new and improved Firefox browsing ability!
