May 2008 Will Sizzle in the Theaters: Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Chronicles of Narnia, Indiana Jones, and Sex and the City

Summer 2008 will be heating up the box office as another stream of heavy hitters hopes for blockbuster returns. May flowers will be joined by the ringing of the movie opening bell as many studios clamor for your summer dollars.

The summer blockbuster season will start early on the first Friday in May, May 2, with the release of the much anticipated Iron Man. There's been some debate as to whether this B or even C list comic hero can run with the big boys like Spiderman and Batman, but you can be sure that people will be lining up to find out. Word is that should Iron Man live up to the much applauded trailers and early screen shots, this movie could start the next big trilogy in the science fiction world.

The next week, with releases coming on May 9, looks to be the downer week of the month. The Speed Racer movie is the only big release of the week. It almost seems the studios are afraid to release something after Iron Man, or they weren't ready to kick off their season quite so soon before Memorial Day. What ever the reason, we are left with Speed Racer being the only big release for the week.

Speed Racer is probably the iffiest release of May 2008. Questions remain with Warner Brother's choice to let the Wachowski brothers of Matrix fame take the helm for this remake of the 1960 cartoon. Early trailers and screen shots are getting mixed reviews, but the lack of other movies released this week, the strength of the Speed Racer franchise and the popularity of Anime, the mod look and all things Japanese may help spring board this movie to the number one spot. Well, it may hold that title for a week.

The next week starting with May 16 returns us to the heavy hitting blockbuster days we have grown accustomed to. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian finally hits the silver screen. This is the much, and long, awaited sequel to the hit The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe that came out way back in 2005. The studio is hoping to make all seven of C.S. Lewis' Narnia books into movies. Let's hope that they complete them within my lifetime. Regardless of the long span between movies, this one is sure to be a sell out.

Speaking of gaps between movies in a series, the next week brings about our first Thursday release of the summer, and this one is a biggie. Indiana Jones returns to the big screen on Thursday, May 22 to the joy of fan boys and theater goers everywhere. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is one of the most anticipated movies of 2008 and the internet has been buzzing about this movie since it was supposedly shelved in 2004. You can almost guarantee this one will sell out, and rightly so. This is the fourth movie in the favorite Jones series and, should it stay true to the other editions, will combine comedy and action and have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. This is what summer blockbusters are all about.

Indiana's buzz is probably only on par with one other movie's early pr. This would be the much anticipated, much debated, and much prayed for Sex and the City movie which lands in theaters on May 30. This movie is a long time coming for fans of the HBO series, and will fill the theater seats with more Carries, Samanthas, Mirandas and Charlottes then theater worker are used to seeing in the summer months. Sex and the City will end the month of May with a bang.

May is just the kick off to the summer movie bonanza, but with titles like these, we can be sure that popcorn will be a mainstay in summer diets.
