May Day

Leslie Boe
May Day is a wonderful time to surprise someone anonymously with a kind act. These days our vocabulary includes the phrase "random acts of kindness", which can take the place of May Day.

Its great that we carry the May Day feeling throughout the rest of the year. However, that means we really have to go above and beyond our usual acts of being kind.

While it is easier to give of our money as a "random act of kindness", it is far more difficult to give our social self. With that in mind, perhaps we can socialize with someone that we usually would not spend time. Another thing that we can do is to volunteer for an organization working with other people.

This is the one day that we can be free to open our minds and hearts to others. Consider it a trial period of one day. If you like it, you can continue your chosen May Day act throughout the rest of the year. If you don't, consider it your May Day act and move on to try something else as a random act of kindness. Sooner or later you will find something that you do enjoy doing for others.

After all, doing things to help others, helps us.

This was a very good read and a nice reminder of what the day was meant for.

It's always nice to be surprised with a random act of kindness. British May Day falls on 5th May though and that's when it is observed as a public holiday with everything shut for the day.
