Generally, May is the month where the weather starts changing towards a more suitable climate, and people start shedding their winter gear, replacing them with light jackets and/or sweaters; spring is in the air, and blooms are beginning to show, giving us nature at its very finest. This is a great time to take a long walk, reveling in all that nature has to offer.
Residents in Detroit can be seen walking around Belle Isle. Belle Isle has numerous ways to take in nature's glory, with walking/biking/hiking trails, paths and sidewalks alongside the Belle Isle roadways. All roads lead to another attraction on the small island; the Belle Isle Zoo is a major attraction for visitors, as well as the year-round conservatory.
Speaking of the conservatory, if you would like your outdoor activity to be an event where you can still enjoy the wonders of nature, join in on the celebration of Flower Day at Eastern Market. An annual display of a vast variety of flowers, and exotic blooms grown by local Michigan farmers and bordering neighboring states/countries. Make it an event to remember, by indulging in the selective restaurants, fresh foods, and retail stores.
It's one thing to enjoy nature at its best, but take advantage of the fun activities made specifically for the outdoors; recreational activities designed to make the best of the outdoors. A sightseeing adventure on the Great Lakes will satisfy that craving. If you don't have a problem with traveling from Grand Rapids, and returning to Detroit - on water, you will enjoy the activity tours and adventure trips offered. A link is provided for more information.
Being in a state near bodies of water, residents of Detroit have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities like fishing. An avid fisher, would probably refer to a fishing guide for proper days and times, but fishing is an all-around outdoor activity. When fishing, you are not only enjoying the beauty of being outdoors, taking in nature. You are also participating in an event that will benefit the entire family ... you get nourishment: food; fishing can easily become a family event, giving your children a chance to learn your favorite childhood past-time.
Great Outdoors Month happens once a year, so get outdoors and have a year's worth of family fun!
