Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness Month? Many people suffer from a mental health disorder. Mental health care is a huge concern in this country. Take the time to find out more about mental health because the chances are huge that you know someone who has issues with mental health care. There is no age discrimination where mental illness is concerned. It can happen to a child or an aging adult. Here are some things that you should know about mental health care:

What it is

Mental health is your inner being. It is how your mind works, and how you react to certain situations. There is good mental health. An example of good mental health is being able to take joy in your day even in the small things. A person with good mental health can handle daily performance normally. There is also bad mental health in which a person is incapable of normal daily functioning. Some examples of bad mental health are things like anxiety, severe stress, depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and being bi-polar.

Age

As stated before mental health care can start even at an early age. So it is something you could notice even in a child. Many adults have mental health care issues. The National Institute of Mental Health states that "one in four adults will experience a mental health disorder in a given year. That is approximately 57.7 million Americans a year."

Fault

You can never blame the person who has a mental illness for having it. It is a medical condition. It is not just something a person can just get over. They did not decide to have this health condition. It is just how their body is. So there can never be any fault.

First Step

It is important that someone who has a mental health disorder get help. You cannot just wish yourself out of bad mental health. You need to take the right steps to get better. First step is to get evaluated by your doctor. Let your doctor diagnose what is going on with you. Never self diagnose.

Treatment

If your doctor thinks you do have a mental health disorder than you may be encouraged to get some treatment. This can include medications to help your mental health. You might be asked to get some therapy so that you can learn new ways to handle your mental disorder. Some people even join support groups so that they can learn from others. Getting the right kind of treatment is important for your mental health improvement.
