As you celebrate the special women in your life, do not overlook that other holiday-May is also National Orgasm Month.
The holiday originated in Brazil as National Orgasm Day, and is gently making waves in America with the help of the buxom Baywatch beauty Pamela Anderson Lee as the official spokesperson. Last year, Lee, a vegetarian, joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA), to celebrate National Orgasm Day. "For your best orgasm ever, go vegetarian," Lee wrote on her official web site.
The vegan connection is a seamless one as PETA asserts that 'red meat clogs the arteries therefore lessening the pleasure of one's orgasm.'
Organizations looking to extend the holiday to an entire month include activists who have created National Masturbation Month (also celebrated in May), to honor former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders, who was fired after she suggested that the self-love ritual might be a relevant means for teaching sex education.
No partner? No problem!
Today, single women appear to be doing just fine solo, according to ALongitudinal Assessment of Aging in Women:What Does Sexuality Mean to Older Women?, a study conducted by the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Australia. The study assessed the sex lives of women in their 40s thru 70s, and found that nearly 56 percent of sexually active single women reached orgasm every time alone, compared with only 24 percent of women with partners.
"I'd imagine there are few men out there a little surprised," quipped medical sex therapist Dr. Jane Howard. "And unimpressed that women have better luck without them."
In Chicago, Zondra Hughes, author of The M.O.O.D. Lounge, encourages women to "dump bad boys for great toys" and is encouraged by the women's study. In her novel, mistreated New York women go on strike until the misbehaving men get their act together. The women form a support group/toy party, Multiple Orgasms On Demand.
"I do hope that women everywhere will become proactive about their intimate health, and discover their likes and dislikes," Hughes beams. "And no longer feel compelled to fake it."
Not so fast.
Yet another study reveal that American women are still faking it, in droves.
The new Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey revealed that Americans are lagging behind in the bedroom when compared to lovers from around the world--and when Americans make love, less than half are fully satisfied.
The survey, conducted online during August and September 2006, found that twice as many American men than women
usually orgasm.
"Men go sequentially, from desire and arousal to orgasm," explained Rutgers University professor Beverly Whipple,
on the Health Report radio show presented by Dr. Norman Swan. "Women have many different sexual responses...orgasm in
women is not just a reflex."
Not all news is bad news for American lovers, however.
The Durex study reports that many Americans are devoted to improving their satisfaction levels,
with 41% of the respondents recognizing the importance of 'introducing a little more experimentation,' with
fantasies and massage topping their 'to-do' list.
Who knows? Perhaps the search for the "Big O" is finally nearing an end.
