Maybelline Colossal Mascara Review: Horrible Stuff

Maybelline Colossal Mascara Failed Miserably

Lehticia Leo
Maybelline Colossal mascara has gotten rave reviews from beauty bloggers and writers throughout the internet. This is not going to be one of those reviews. Never in my life have I been more disappointed with a tube of mascara. The official Maybelline website claims, "Colossal mascara instantly creates 9X the volume, the collagen formula plumps lashes one by one and the formula provides dramatic volume with no clumps." Um, excuse me. What mascara are you marketing, buddy? Because that's certainly far from what the Maybelline Colossal mascara did to my lashes. Here's my experience.

Clumpety-Clump-Clump-Clump

I am well aware of the proper technique that should be used to apply mascara. The Colossal mascara made my lashes look as if I tried to comb mushy black Play-doh through my lashes. The very first time I applied the mascara, I noticed the clumps in my lashes. I thought, "Okay, I'll just use my lash comb to comb out the clumps." But, when I brushed my lash comb through my lashes, the ends of my lashes began to look as if black fibers were growing out the ends. I decided to wear the mascara for the rest of the day and within an hour or so the mascara began to flake onto my cheek and later in the evening flakes of mascara began to make their way into my eye. Yep, that's right; under my eyelid. Gross.

Removal

When it came time to remove the mascara, I felt relief. I was glad that I would finally be able to get this catastrophic mess of a mascara off of my lashes. I remembered that the Maybelline website claimed that Colossal is easily removed with only soap and water. Going off of the results of all their other claims, I expected to need a bulldozer to remove this mascara. But, to my surprise Colossal mascara actually lived up to one of it's claims. I was able to easily wash out the mascara without the need for an eye makeup remover (or a bulldozer).

Final Thoughts

Clearly, I do not recommend this mascara. Colossal only costs about $7 at drugstores, but even at such a low price point, I believe it's overpriced. If you're on the lookout for a durable volumizing mascara that doesn't clump, I recommend L'Oreal's Telescopic mascara; it volumizes, lengthens, doesn't clump and stays on all day. What more could a girl ask for in a mascara?

Wow, I actually found this mascara to be good! It didn't deliver 9X volume, but my lashes didn't go horribly clumpy or flaky either.
