A Fun and Educational Place to Visit!

If you have ever been to any of the southern states, you have probably seen Mayfield Dairy products. You can't miss Mayfield's bright yellow containers. Mayfield Dairy is located in Athens, Tennessee, half-way between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Mayfield Dairy is much more than just a place where milk and other dairy products are turned out. Mayfield Dairy is part of history. T.B. Mayfield, Jr. purchased 45 Jersey cows in 1910. When he began delivering milk to his customers in Athens he probably didn't have a clue that Mayfield Dairy would be as big and as successful as it is today, some 100 years later.

In 1950 two Mayfield brothers, Thomas B. Mayfield III and C. Scott Mayfield, Sr. joined forces and had a modern milking plant built, the most modern in the south at the time. Scottie Mayfield and Ralph Mayfield now run the show. Scottie is quite a character. You can see him on the local news channels periodically. He is quite a standout in his famous bow-tie.

Mayfield Daily currently has 2,000 employees and Mayfield Dairy products can be purchased in 9 states which include part of Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Mississippi and Florida. They cover all of South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama and a tiny section of Mississippi. And to think it all began in Athens as a small town business started by a man with big ideas.

Mayfield makes more than just white milk by the gallon, pint and quart. They have buttermilk, 2% reduced fat, whole milk, chocolate milk, low fat chocolate fat free skim milk plus a few more varieties. You can get ice cream in ½ gallon, pints and 5-pint pails. Don't forget light frozen yogurt as well as ice cream sandwiches, fudge bars and brown cow. They also do sour cream and cottage cheese products.

Now that your mouth is watering and you are anxious to try some Mayfield ice cream, there is good news. You can take a tour of Mayfield Dairy in Athens, TN. Start off watching a film about the dairy, learn about milking, find out how they make those bright yellow bottles and top off the visit with some delicious ice cream, made by Mayfield Dairy. The kids and the kid in you will enjoy spending some time at Mayfield Dairy. Not only is it education and fun, its tasty too!

Mayfield Dairy is open for tours Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm - check here for directions and special seasonal hours. Don't forget to check out the gift shop. The address is 4 Mayfield Lane, Athens, TN, phone: 423-629-3435.

I used to spend the summers with my Aunt Betty and Uncle Dick and they had cows, chickens, pigs and acres of vegetables. Wow, this article brought back all those sweet memories...

I'm a fan of Turtle Mountain's Soy Frozen Dessert myself, but the tour sounds like something my niece and nephew would enjoy.

Great profile! Mayfield doesn't market its products in Texas, but I'll have to keep an eye out for them the next time I'm in Memphis.

Our cross country drive is coming up soon, taking us on I-40 through Knoxville. While Athens is a little out of the way, I'd go the miles to see the Dairy and my absolute favorite animals, the cows! Thanks for information on the good stuff to see in Tennessee!
