Mayor Jejomar Binay on Winning the Very Tight Philippine Vice-presidential Race

Aaron Tadeo
Today, I watched the news as the congress finally finished the counting of the election returns. As expected from the trend, Senator Noynoy Aquino and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay won the Presidential and Vice-presidential race respectively. The presidential race seems to be what most people expected. However, the result of the vice-presidential race was a shock to many people since they were expecting Senator Mar Roxas to win as he is the running mate of Senator Noynoy Aquino.

It was a very tight race and based from the data I saw on Inquirer.net, Mayor Binay was ahead by only more than 700,000 votes. Even during the unofficial tallies, people were eager to see any changes that may occur and had been following that closely as the numbers are really close. But then, in the end, it was Mayor Binay who won.

Today, I watched TV Patrol World on ABS-CBN channel 2 and listened to Ted Failon's (news anchor) interview with Jejomar Binay. Let me give you the gist of some of the questions and answers. Some of the common questions were asked such as will he be able to do to the Philippines what he did to Makati City. In my opinion, it's possible since it's also what Senator Noynoy wants. It's healthcare for Filipinos as well.

The next important question was what would be his reaction about Senator Mar Roxas filing a dispute to the election committee. Well, he answered the same way I would have answered. This is a democratic country and he has every right to do so.

And of course, will he be able to work with the Aquino administration? Well, I'm pretty sure he can and they will be able to work effectively. Mayor Binay is also a close friend of Senator Noynoy's as seen on the news and they both seem to be able to do the job and I'm pretty sure most, if not everyone, will back them up.

I noticed that Mayor Binay did not answer some of the questions directly but that's fine. There are a lot of things in store now and a lot of things to work for and the next administration is due to step into office when the incumbent administration steps down on June 30.

Well, as for me, it doesn't really matter who the Vice President is. I know he's capable and I've personally seen what he did in Makati City. Even though I'm miles away from Makati, I always wanted to visit the place as you can feel it is really well-organized in its own way and not to undermine other cities. There may be problems along the way but hopefully, they could all work in harmony and lift up the country from its economic turmoil.
