Valentine's Day in Shelbyville, IN. has the mayor, Scott Ferguson, performing wedding ceremonies. For the third year, Mayor Ferguson will perform wedding ceremonies, vow renewals, and commitment ceremonies in the one room schoolhouse of Grover's Museum "Streets of Old Shelby". The museum is located in the heart of town located at 52 West Broadway in Shelbyville. It is part of the National Historical Society of Shelby County. The "Streets of Old Shelby" looks just like a trip downtown would have been like in the early 1900's complete with a moonlight scene at the end of the street. There are shops located along the way. It is the perfect place for this type of event.

This event was created by Scott Spahr. Mr. Spahr is the property manager for Charles Major Manor, an income-based housing program for senior citizens. Mr. Spahr was looking for a fundraiser for the program and decided that Valentine's Day was the perfect opportunity for a new and unique fundraiser. This year the event has grown to include relief funds for the Red Cross to use for Haiti. There are two fabulous ideas to use the money that is collected in this fundraiser. The diasterous earthquake that hit Haiti a few weeks ago goes beyond any devastation that we could imagine in this part of the world and it is important that the Haitian people know that people many, many miles away are thinking about them and what a better gift at Valentine's Day than to give the gift of love and aid to them.

Ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until all couples have gone through their ceremonies. If a couple has a small wedding party, they are welcome to use the smaller old-time wedding chapel that is also at the Museum. Couples may purchase a wedding package for $125 that includes a candle-lit ceremony as well as a gift basket, wedding photo, flowers and a cake. There is seating available for up to 10 friends and family.

If you live near Shelbyville, IN or are just wanting to make a quick trip to renew your vows, commit to one another , then this might be just the event that you are looking for. The idea is one that is unique and you will be helping two wonderful charities at the same time.
