Mayweather Vs Mosley: Odds to Win and Prediction

Mosley Has a Punchers Chance but Can He Hit Mayweather?

Todd Jacobs
When Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley square off in the ring May 1st at the MGM Grand, boxing history will be made. Whether Mosley shocks everyone with a stunning knockout or Mayweather wins by decision, the winner of this fight will cement the legacy of their boxing careers.

Mayweather's claim to be greatest of all time is not a ploy-- he really believes it.
Floyd Mayweather Jr already claims he is the greatest boxer of all time. On Jim Rome is Burning, the ESPN show, Mayweather took umbrage with Jim Rome, for questioning the fact that Mayweather was the greatest of all time. To Rome's credit, he did not let the brash comment from Mayweather go unchecked.

Mayweather claimed the mantle as greatest of all time and said arrogantly, "Why Muhammad Ali and not me?" see the entire interview on you tube here. Rome said the next day on his radio show, "That was not an act, he actually believes what he was saying." Rome said incredulously. "He continued on after the show went off the air."

Mayweather can be considered ripe for the picking in this fight, since he does appear to be caught up with his legacy right now. Mayweather would love nothing more than to win the Mosley fight and retire without fighting Manny Pacquiao. Mosley is a challenge to Mayweather but even as Mayweather's trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather said at the weigh in on Friday, "This fight should have happened a long time ago."

Shane Mosley speed and reactions have slowed over time.
Shane Mosley has grown older before our eyes and he does seem a bit punchy when talking to the press. Mosley has been a warrior in his boxing career, choosing to stand and fight like a true boxer. The epic battles over the years have caught up with Mosley. Mosley's reactions have slowed but he does still have more power than Mayweather has ever had to deal with.

Mosley has the proverbial punchers chance in this fight and if he is going to score the knockout he will have to close the deal in the early rounds. If this fight progresses past the sixth or seventh round, Mayweather's superior conditioning will take over and the remaining five rounds will be a typical boring Mayweather defensive fight.

This fight could end up just as the Oscar De LaHoya fight. In that fight De LaHoya fans watched their hero grow old in the ring and succumb to the faster, defense savvy, Mayweather. Mosley has to come out fast and do whatever it takes to get Mayweather in the corner, although that is easier than it sounds.

Another strategy that Mosley can employ is to focus on Mayweather's hands. Mayweather's hands are fragile and if Mosley can take the punishment and make sure he makes as much contact with Mayweather's hands through punches and elbow blocks, Mayweather may have to back off.

Mayweather is -425 at the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook Mosley is +350.
Mosley is the pick if there is a bet to made on this fight. A bet on Mosley is based on odds and chance. It doesn't make sense to bet $425 to win $100 so a bet on Mayweather is not a smart bet. The risk versus reward factor is too great to bet the prohibitive favorite Mayweather. On the other hand betting $100 on Mosley wins $350, which is worth a shot at tripling the bankroll. Better yet, bet someone at the fight party that you are attending straight up and take Mayweather, that is a good bet.

I would love to see Mayweather lose this fight, but I said that with the De La Hoya and Hatton fight. Mayweather is good, maybe great. And he knows it. That's the reason I don't like him.
