Mazanor (Mazindol) Causes Xerostomia/Dry Mouth/Cotton Mouth

Racheline Maltese
Mazindol is the generic name for a prescription weight loss drug sold under the names Mazanor and Sanorex. Mazindol works by exciting your nervous system, which means your heart rate and blood pressure go up and your appetite goes down. Mazindol is meant for short term use in conjunction with an exercise and and diet change program supervised by your doctor.

Like many medications, Mazindol has side effects, some minor, some quiet serious. Xerostomia (dry or cotton mouth) is one common side effect, that while essentially minor is aggravating and can have serious consequences over the long term.

Dry mouth can lead to an increase in cavities, gum disease and bad breath. Making sure Mazindol doesn't have these negative consequences for you can be especially challenging, since the drug is also part of a weight loss program that encourages you to eat less. While dieting and taking Mazindol, you will need to find other ways to stimulate saliva production in your mouth than eating.

First, while taking Mazindol be sure to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water every day can be difficult for many people, as thirst and hunger feel relatively the same to many people. Making sure to get your eight to ten glasses of water a day is critical when taking Mazindol, however.

Make sure you strive to stay hydrated by drinking water and not other beverages when you are taking Mazindol. Coffee, tea and other liquids containing caffeine can enhance dry mouth. Caffeine has diuretic effects, meaning it helps to remove moisture from the body. Consuming it can aggravate a dry mouth problem.

Avoiding sugary sodas is also important when fighting dry mouth. Sugar can lead to an increase of bad bacteria in the mouth that can make the experience of dry mouth worse and more damaging to your teeth.

If you want to add some flavor to your water, squeeze just a bit of lemon into it. The sourness of the fruit will help stimulate saliva production and relieve some of your dry mouth symptoms.

Keeping your mouth active while taking Mazindol is another way to combat dry mouth. Since Mazindol will reduce your appetite, don't snack, but rather look to chewing sugar free gum or sucking on sugar-free candy. Keeping your mouth busy and excercised increases saliva production and also doesn't give bad bacteria a change to build up.

Remember that dry mouth can be a symptom of other medical conditions. If you continue to experience dry mouth after you stop taking Mazindol, be sure to talk to your doctor about it.
