McCafe Mocha Review

Can McDonalds Mocha Compete with the Big Boys?

Robin Neorr
When I first heard that McDonalds was opening McCafes I was convinced that absolutely no one would go to McDonalds to get their fancy coffee. I mean the economy is tight, but the home of the value menu is just not going to have the morning prestige that carrying around that green and white cup has.

Then I thought about it. The coffee at McDonalds is very good. It doesn't taste burnt, it is affordable, and they even put cream and sugar in it for you. I was sold I was trying the McCafe.

PROS: The mocha is definitely cheaper. You can get a small for $2.40 and a medium for $2.90. The large is a whopping $3.30 a price that Starbucks can't touch. I mean these drinks are running a full dollar less then your average Starbucks fair. You will be saving over one thousand dollars a year if you switch your daily mocha to the McCafe variety.

The drink itself is smooth. There is no burnt taste. It comes in your choice of whole milk or skim milk and they ask if you want whipped cream. The chocolate flavor is unmistakable. I enjoy being able to taste the chocolate rather then just taste the espresso.

The drive thru option is great on a busy morning. Not to mention the fact that you can get an egg McMuffin while you are at it. They have real breakfast foods that stick with you for more then a few minutes.

CONS: You won't find the variety of caribou Coffee or Starbucks at a McCafe. Your options are limited to Cappuccino, Latte, Iced Latte, Mocha or the Iced Mocha. If you these are not up your alley there is the regular coffee, but if you want a Carmel Macchiato you won't find it here.

The cup does not have the prestige of the white and green. You will not be making a social statement while carrying around a McDonald's cup, but does this really matter? If you answer yes then you can pass on the McCafe.

McCafes are not open at all McDonalds just yet. They are in select locations, but are set to roll out nationwide in 2009.

Overall I have to say that I am sold on the McCafes. I have been there the last two mornings and plan on making a habit of it. I love a good Mocha and I love being able to get a breakfast sandwich with it. My only complaint is that they haven't opened more test locations.

When they make it right, the mochas at Mcdonalds are good, but how hard is it Mcdonalds???? Ive wasted so much money over the years trying to enjoy a "good mocha" and 1 out of ten are suitable to drink. When you confront them, they look at you like your are crazy when in face if u take another sip you feel like your are gonna up chuck!!!! Come on Mcdonalds, you might need a manditorty class on "How to make decent mocha's for dummies"!!!!!!!! If you are gonna charge $3 for a drink, you better get it right and not treat your customers like they are the dummies!!!!!!

Thanks for the information. I've wondered about McCafe. Will pass this along to my caffeine fiend daughter :-)

Food or should I say drinks for thought.

I have tried a McCafe latte three times now. It is very weak. Tastes like warm milk to me. This was from three DIFFERENT locations too, so I guess it is how employees are instructed to make them, but the lattes need revision.

Great review. I've always wondered if Mcdonald's coffee tasted good. Thanks for writing the article.

Yes, McCafe's are very good. My issue with Starbucks, as I enjoy the iced coffee's is that there's too much ice and it's watered down. Today I passed up Starbucks & had a McCafe' hot Mocha (little daughter wanted her Happy Meal) and it was very good...and potent. I'll be up most the night now. :o)

Yeah, except the "baristas" at McDonald's don't put their heart into their coffee as basristas do elsewhere.
It shows too. And, well, tastes.
    Far too heavy hazelnut.
    Excessive caramel.
    Etcc.
    And it's ALWAYS, always, ALWAYS.

My sister who can afford Starbucks has given it up, at least in summer, for the Iced Mocha she can get at our regular McDonald's. I hate iced coffee (don't know why, since I love it hot!) but haven't tried the McMocha, etc; mainly because I hardly ever drink fancy coffee drinks out. I just drink a quality coffee at home (like Gevalia or Boca Java), and take my go-cup if I need to! (Can you say "Cheap?"! That's me!) Good article!

I enjoyed this very well-written article, though as a die-hard recessionista, I advise transferring the Mickey Dee cafe mocha into a Starbucks coffee mug and no one will be the wiser. On the other hand, it is more fashionable now to be saving money whenever possible, so drinking from a Starbucks cup may soon become declasse or suggest poor money management skills.

there's something to be said about the drive-thu option.
