"I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
This is a direct quote from Al Gore to Wolf Blitzer on March 9, 1999, as is evident from a CNN transcript of the Q and A session. Taken out of context, it would appear as though Al Gore has put the screwdriver to the metal, crunched his algorithms and presented us with the information super highway. When read in context, it is quite apparent that Mr. Gore referred - in a somewhat clumsy manner - to the fact that he paved the economic way for the 'Net.
"He did this."
The Los Angeles Times reports that this is a direct quote from John McCain staff member Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who appears to have forgotten that in an election year, the press has the sense of humor of a pit bull (without lipstick). Clearly believing it to be a statement of similar intent as Mr. Gore's, Mr. Eakin held up his Blackberry and gave John McCain credit for working in the Commerce Committee that paved the way for Blackberries and associated devices.
Disregarding of Disabilities?
Douglas Holtz-Eakin and his McCain Blackberry connection come on the heels of a rather scornful Barack Obama attack ad (watch it on YouTube!) that makes Senator McCain look like one of the old fogies who cannot work a computer or even send email.
Apparently overlooking the fact that the President of the United States has staff to perform such tasks, the ad is in poor taste, considering that with two broken arms it might be somewhat hard for Senator McCain to operate a mouse and keyboard. When adding this to the Joe Biden faux pas of asking wheelchair bound Senator Chuck Graham - as reported by the Huffington Post - to get up, one must wonder about the mis-direction of the Obama campaign.
What about the Issues?!
If you are also wondering how Obama or McCain are responding to the Washington Mutual bankruptcy rumors, stock market jitters, the AIG stock price, an Obama or McCain economic plan, or the dwindling nest eggs of at least two generations of savers, you are waiting in vain for decisive answers. The candidates are focusing on finger pointing, questions of age, and whether or not Sarah Palin paid for her gubernatorial tanning bed out of pocket. Oh, bother.

Post a CommentPolitical ads in poor taste? God forbid! What about the McCain ad that stated Barack Obama was for teaching sex ed to kindergartners when the bill Obama voted for was to teach the children of the dangers of predators. Neither side has a monopoly on those kind of ads.
The major problem with Al Gore's statement, even when taken in context, is that it's still false.
Sylvia, The snide McCain ad make reek of staff ignorance - I can't imagine anyone aware of his injuries being so insensitive. You are so right about the focus on everything but what really matters in this election; it is beyond tiresome and in the realm of insidious by now. Your Winnie the Pooh commentary is right on the mark.
Wow. Then that means that McCain is independently wealthy, huh? No wonder he doesn't know how many houses he owns...
McCain doesn't even know how to e-mail, let alone use a blackberry.
I wondered what this was about...sorry I asked, because of the answer, ..though nice job.
McCain's injuries keep him from raising his arms not typing, and he is the one who originally brought up the idea that he isn't computer savvy. Regardless, I think that Mr. Holtz-Eakin just got ahead of himself and spit out one of the better quotable quotes. I'm sure we'll see it come up on Jeopardy in a few years.
The photo depicted isn't even a BlackBerry.
If, John McCain invented the BlackBerry then he must be a Canadian citizen. This would disqualify him from running for President or he believes in shipping our jobs outside of the U.S.A...

Not to get off topic here, but Sen. Bob Dole, who suffered a war injury in WWII, always had a pencil stuck in his paw since that arm was paralyzed... I would hazard a guess that no one would dare impugn his typing skills? If McCain can't type either due to his war injuries, then the Obama ad is in poor taste.
