McDonald's celebrated on Tue., May 17,2011 with the sale of its 25,000th Big Mac served, "to just one man", that is. The Big Mac sale took place at the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin McDonald's, exactly 39 years after the retired prison guard ate his first- nine Big Macs on May 17,1972. Don Gorske said he purchased 3 Big Macs to celebrate the purchase of a new car, back on that day in May 1972. He said he automatically became hooked on the "two all- beef patties, with special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun burger", and went back to those "Golden Arches" twice more that day, purchasing a total of nine of that famous McDonald burger.
Since 1994 when McDonald's began issuing receipts, Gorske has saved each one as a way to record how many Big Mac's he eats. He said he often buys the burgers in bulk and then stores them in the refrigerator or freezer and microwaves them when he's ready to eat them. He said he timed his 25,000th Big Mac to coincide with the anniversary of his first purchase.
This isn't Gorske's first claim to fame for eating Big Mac's. In 2004 he appeared in Super Size Me, a documentary about experimenting with a McDonald's diet. In 2008 he was awarded the Guinness World Record for the most Big Mac's consumed-that was "2,000 burgers ago".
Gorske said he probably has an obsessive compulsive disorder, but is in surprisingly good health, despite the fact that the FDA says one Big Mac contains more then a quarter of the calories a person on a 2000 calorie diet should consume, plus about 40% more sodium and fat they recommend. He averages 2 Big Macs a day and makes sure he has Big Mac's on hand when he travels, just in case he doesn't spot those Golden Arches along the way.
Gorske said he likes other foods including brats and lobster, but "loves" the Big Mac. His wife Mary is a nurse and jokes about ending this streak of his when she has to start blending his Big Mac's. The Big Mac provides the protein and grains the body needs, but Gorske is probably missing out on the fruits and vegetables he should be eating to stay healthy.
The 59 year old says he has no desire to stop eating Big Mac's and plans on eating them until the day he dies. He's only gone 8 days in the 39 years since he started eating the Big Mac's without eating at least one a day. One of those days was Thanksgiving Day of 2000 when he forgot to stock up on them and McDonald's was closed for the holiday. I don't know if he ate turkey that day or not.
