McDonald's Happy Meal Comes with a Condom

McDonald's restaurants across the world have spent years innovating meals for children. The famous Happy Meal created a new target audience for the restaurant industry. That target? The kids. Creating a meal for kids that is truly all their own, Happy Meals are served in a separate bag just for children. They include choices kids love: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken McNuggets and french fries.

What else do you expect to find in a Happy Meal from a McDonald's Restaurant? Perhaps a little plastic toy to go with the cheeseburger and french fries, but certainly not an opened condom! That's what grandparents in New Zealand came across in their granddaughter's McDonald's bag. The Dominion Post newspaper reported that they purchased the Happy Meal from a McDonald's located in Wellington on Tuesday night.

Grandfather Rowan Hutch thankfully reported that his wife opened the bag and noticed a green condom with its wrapper inside the Happy Meal bag before granddaughter, Maia Whitaker saw the offending addition to her meal. "I was pretty horrified really. The fact my granddaughter was going to look in the bag and find this thing. It would be difficult to explain, she's only seven," said Hutch.

The local store immediately switched the meal and included a pencil case as the toy prize. McDonald's spokeswoman Joanna Redfern-Hardisty claims the mishap occurred because the original Happy Meal toy prizes were such a hit, they quickly sold out. As a result, prepackaged sports bags were put inside the Happy Meals as a substitution. She further explained that one of the condoms was left opened for display purposes and somehow it managed to find its way to the customer. Her explanation did little to adequately explain how restaurant employees allowed a seven year old patron to receive an inappropriate surprise in her Happy Meal. McDonald's is investigating the matter.
