McDonald's New McCafe Coffee Review

Emma
Who hasn't seen the new McDonald's McCafe commercials? They are all over the television, I can't watch a thirty minute program without seeing one. The stores are also heavily promoting them with signs all over the outside of their buildings and huge signs all over the drive through.

With this much promotion, the drinks are bound to be great, right? I am always looking for an alternative to the expensive drinks at Starbucks. So, I decided to taste test a few of their drinks and see if they lived up to all the hype.

I'll start with the good. The iced coffee's are pretty good. There are five different flavors to choose from. You can get the regular iced coffee with just plain cream, vanilla, sugar-free vanilla, caramel or hazelnut. I tried all of these except the sugar-free vanilla. They taste just like the flavors they are supposed to and give a good shot of the caffeine most of us are seaking in our coffee drinks. The portions are large too and well worth the prize.

Next, I tried the hot mocha. The commercials and pictures make this drink look so appetizing I could hardly resist. The whipped cream and chocolate sauce decorating the top just seemed like the perfect addition to the drink. I wish this had lived up to what I was expecting. It was not very good at all. It really wasn't worth the price tag of over $3 after tax. I would have much preferred the cheaper iced coffee.

So, on to the iced mocha. This one gives you the choice of nonfat or whole milk. I opted for the less calories and chose the nonfat version. The coffee is mized with chocolate syrup and topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I dragged my husband down with me on this one and our two drinks were over $6 after tax. I wish I could say something good about these but they were just plain terrible. I choked down two sips and had to throw the rest away. My husband managed to get four sips down before giving up and chucking his into the trash. There was nothing redeeming about these drinks and I will never try them again.

Bottom line, I give the new drinks a D and only that high of a grade because of the iced coffee's. McDonald's offers a few other drinks in their new line including a cappuccino, latte, iced latte, and hot chocolate. I do not have the stomach to try any more of them. The iced mocha was so terrible, I will not drink anything other than the iced coffee at their restaurants. If you're looking for a cheaper version and need a caffeine fix, I suggest trying a new iced coffee in a flavor you like. Otherwise, spend the extra money and get something from Starbucks that you can actually drink.
