McDonald's Recall Refund Offer Not Currently Valid in Restaurants

McDonald's 'Shrek Forever After' Glassware Recall Confusion

Drew Taylor
Update:
The McDonald's website now has complete Shrek glass refund information. Beginning Wednesday, June 9, customers can return the recalled glasses to any McDonald's restaurant. The original receipt is not necessary, but customers must complete a refund form to receive $3 for each glass.

Early Friday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of approximately 12 million Shrek Forever After collectible glasses after a tipster alerted the Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier to the cadmium-laden drinkware sold at McDonald's locations across America.

Congresswoman Speier is drafting legislation to establish more stringent limits on the acceptable cadmium content in children's products. In light of the changing safety standards, McDonald's chose to err on the side of caution even though the collectible glasses do not violate current safety regulations

As with past recalls, the situation evolved and the initial recall instructions are incorrect.

Local McDonald's Refused to Refund Recalled Shrek Glass
A widely publicized recall procedure directed consumers to return the potentially hazardous glassware to the restaurant for a full refund of the purchase price of two dollars. My sister, who, unaware of the recall, purchased her fourth collectible glass on Friday afternoon, learned this information was incorrect.

When returning the glasses on Saturday, the restaurant refused to give her a refund and provided her with a hotline number for further information. Although these directions are still available on a number of news sites and floating through cyberspace, McDonald's is not issuing refunds in its restaurants.

According to the press release on McDonald's website, concerned customers will have to sit tight and wait for new recall information. In the meantime, the CPSC recommends that consumers exercise caution and discontinue use of the cups. The press release also indicates that Happy Meal toys and the previous set of Shrek glasses are not part of the recall.

Get Accurate McDonald's Shrek Glass Recall Information June 8
The details are not yet available, but the McDonald's website advises customers to visit the site, www.McDonalds.com/glasses on June 8 to get complete, accurate refund information. Hopefully, McDonald's will consider the wasted time, disappointment and concern over this matter and take appropriate action.

Will the recall increase the value of Shrek glasses?
Although some of the visitor comments on this Baltimore Sun blog post suggest the recall will increase the value of the tainted Shrek glasses, it is illegal to resell recalled consumer products. The CPSC makes strong efforts to keep recalled products off the market and out of resale shops.

Technically, the glasses are safe but they are in the process of revising that law to better protect children. Anyone considering using these glasses needs to research the issue and make an informed decision.

The recall explained that cadmium could transfer to hands. It didn't cite any quantities, but I believe it is a concern b/c we tend to eat and drink at that same time, possibly leading to direct ingestion of the cadmium.

I went to MCDonald's drive thru this morning. While there,I asked cashier if they were giving refunds on the Shrek glasses. She commented that she was keeping her glasses and so were her friends. I said maybe they would be okay for adults and that I gave mine to my grandchildren.I told her I believed they were harmful to children. That was the answer I got!
    Thanks for the info!
