Cadmium has recently gained attention because Chinese manufactures started using cadmium to replace the lead paint, which they were forbidden to use. However, this cadmium on the Shrek glasses came from an American company called ARC International of Millville, N.J. Cadmium, even though it has been used to replace lead paint can had adverse effects, especially on children.
The Cadmium was found on the different Shrek characters on the glasses: Shrek, Fiona, Puss n' Boots, and Donkey. If your child or children have one of these glasses, please take the glasses away from him or her. According to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (2010), "Long term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects" (Hazards). The amount of cadmium in the glasses is said to be not toxic; however, the CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson said the levels of cadmium in the glasses were just about the standard level that the CPSC plans to set for cadmium. However, if a person has purchased any of these glasses McDonald's is offering a refund.
McDonald's has not yet made a statement about the recall, but has said the corporation would stop selling the glasses and give refunds for the previously purchased glasses. For more information a person can call McDonald's on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p. m. Eastern Time at 800-244-6227 or visit the McDonald's recall site.
McDonald's handled this recall in a very timely manner, which is good because many children have started to collect these glasses because they have been offered since May 2. However, after this incident will a person be able to trust the different glasses that McDonald's offers periodically for different movies? Hopefully, the CPSC will have the regulations for cadmium in place in a timely manner.
