Mcdonalds Set to Hire 50,000 Employees This Month
What Effects on Unemployment Will This 50,000 Employee Project Have?
Reports from MSNBC.com news services states that the large hiring project by McDonald's will give an increase to the company's workforce by 7.7%, which is typical for summer months. The 50,000 employees to be hired by the McDonald's food chain is to include all positions, from maintenance to crew managers. The large 50,000 employee hiring project should also make it's mark on the still high unemployment rate, however because the workforce numbers are average according to McDonald's, this dent on unemployment may not be significant enough.
Another thing to consider is the rate of pay. While spokeswomen Ahslee Yingling for McDonald's, stated that the average rate of pay is above $8 per hour-per MSNBC.com reports, this rate still varies greatly as McDonald's operates most of it's establishments on a franchise level. This means that individual owners are free to set the pay rate as they wish, in accordance with minimum wage laws. Even hiring 50,000 employees at a pay rate of $8 per hour with a full time schedule of 40 hours per week, it still leaves many employees not far from the poverty level threshold, which is capped just above $11,000 for individuals as of 2010 per US Census reports. So while this hiring project may contain the unemployment rate to a degree, it will still lose the war on the poverty rate.
Despite some of the sad but realistic truths regarding the economic standpoints on the population and our nation as a whole, it is still a positive statement in which the McDonald's food chain is making, of its hiring 50,000 employees. Perhaps this endeavor can spark a chain reaction of some sort to engage other companies to embark on a similar venture. Whether it is hiring 50,000 employees or simply a few, a collective approach in employing the nations population is a sure way to spark the once thriving economy.
