McDonald's Southern Style: Chicken Biscuit Versus Chicken Sandwich

What Tastes Better?

Yona Williams
In an early morning craving to try something new - a coupon for a Buy 1, Get 1 Free Southern Style Chicken Biscuit caught my eye and by 5:30am, I was sinking my teeth into a rather tasty treat. McDonald's is marketing their two latest menu additions as an "am" and "pm" deal, making the new Southern-Style chicken at the restaurant available both morning and night. Two days later, I satisfied my curiosity and purchased the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich with yet another Buy 1, Get 1 Free coupon. How do they compare?

Southern Style Chicken Biscuit

With a not-too-soft, not-too hard biscuit, the Southern-style chicken was really good. It didn't crumble into a mess and it was just the right texture to savor the flavor without any distractions. At the time, I was in the car thinking to myself that the biscuit combination would taste great with honey, but that had to wait because by the time I got home, the first biscuit was gone. I ate the second one much slower (with honey) and seriously, either way was pretty satisfying.

Aside from the McGriddle and the occasional Burger King French Toast Sticks, the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit is one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've tasted in awhile. In Michigan, the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit is $1.89, so I was "lovin' it" when I came across the coupon. It was definitely well worth the try.

Southern Style Chicken Sandwich

Since the Southern-style biscuit was so good, I hoped to experience the same pleasure with the "pm" sandwich. Whereas the biscuit was wrapped in the usual paper, the sandwich came in a Big Mac container. When I opened up the box, the first thing I noticed was the top of the bun was shiny. With further investigation, I believe they must have brushed on a thin coating of butter. The sandwich felt soggy and deflated - when I opened it up, the inside of the bread was saturated with pickle juice. About 5 to 6 pickles decorated the middle of the sandwich. There were no condiments on this sandwich, which is a good thing.

My overall impression of the appearance and taste of the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich receives much less applause than its biscuit counterpart. Without a long-winded explanation - it is simply too soggy in looks and taste. Additionally, the bread doesn't do anything for the sandwich and the two entities fail miserably to blend as one, cohesive sandwich.

In the end, I ate the rest of the sandwich without any bread or condiments because the chicken tastes well enough to stand alone - kinda like boneless fried chicken. With the Buy 1, Get 1 Free coupon, I paid $2.89 (plus tax) for the two sandwiches. Honestly, I think purchasing the sandwich at regular price is a serious waste of time.

Overall Assessment: Definitely try the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit and pass on the sandwich.

Of course it isn't health food but to me McDonald's Southern Style chicken is the tastiest chicken sandwich out there. The chicken is very good and the butter, mayo, and pickle compliment it without overpowering and the soft steamed bun almost melts in your mouth. When I got it there was only 2 thin pickle slices and no pickle juice in the bun; if anything another slice might help ensure that you get a little pickle in every bite.

I'd rate Wendy's Spicy chicken sandwich a close 2nd even though it is a totally different style.

Thought not as good as either Jack-in-the-Box's chicken sandwich on their value menu is the value leader at only a buck for a pretty good chicken sandwich.

I hate the new chicken sandwich. I tried it and didn't like the overwhelming pickle taste, But to each their own. I wouldn't be upset except now all of the chicken sandwichs (except the McChicken) all have a pickle after taste! I loved the crispy chicken sandwich until this stupid southern style stuff came out, now all the chicken is ruined. Is it all pre flavored I wonder?

  • Waaaay too much dill!9/16/2008

No pickles on my biscuit, but the chicken sure tasted like it. There's way too much dill in the breading. The two people I know that don't like pickles, hated the biscuits. I can tolerate pickles, but don't really like them. I certainly don't like the flavor on my chicken biscuits.

The soughern chicken is an attempt to have a sandwhich like Chick-fil.n Not even close. It is ok but if you ever had one at Chick-fil you can tell the difference. Was a fair try but no not even close.

McDonalds Chicken is about the worst out there. The only good chicken they have is the McChicken and Nuggets everything else i.e. the southern sandwich, chicken selects, and the "Premium" chicken sandwiches are collectively the worst menu items in the fast-food market. This is not just my opinion this is fact accept it and come with me to Arby's, or Wendy's, or Burger King, anywhere but McDonald's....for chicken that is.

When I order the Southern style chicken they only put two pickles on it and they don't spray anything on top of the bread, so the bread isn't soggy at all. I thought it was delicious. It sounds to me like the people in the Michigan restaurant are just incompetent.

I tied the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich of a whim and found it very tasty. I do not like Mc Donald's burgers or their nuggets. I went to the drive up window for some iced tea and fries and added a Southern Style Chicken Sandwich to the order. It was very good. I'll buy it again.
