McDonald's Southern Style Chicken Sandwiches

Food Review

Julie Boehlke
On my last trip to McDonald's I decided to try something different. I like the chicken sandwiches that they have to offer so I wanted to try the new Southern Style Chicken Sandwich.

The picture looked good on the ordering screen; a crispy seasoned chicken pattie between a un-sesame saturated sandwich bun with pickles sticking out of the side.

The sandwich comes in a wax paper McDonald's wrapper. As I unfolded the paper to reveal the sandwich, I was surprised that the sandwich was such a decent size.

As I lifted the bun I realized they had brushed the bun with butter or oil. The point of this was unknown to me as the bun did not appear to be grilled what so ever. I assume it is just a way of McDonald's trying to bring the southern style of cooking to fast food (as if it isn't grease and fat saturated enough!)

Under the bun was nothing but the chicken pattie and 2 lonely pickles. I almost laughed and immediately thought about going back and asking them to add some mayo or honey mustard sauce to the sandwich. I went ahead and tried the sandwich anyway and it to my surprise it was really tasty.

As I bit into it, the outside of the pattie was very crunchy and lightly spicy, but not overwhelming. The inside of the chicken pattie was moist and warm.

The entire sandwich filled me up quite well. The pickles added a strange twist in flavor variation.

I was actually expecting there to maybe even be some type of gravy on the top of the chicken sandwich, I thought that this would have added more flavor and kept the sandwich more moist for a longer period of time.

If the sandwich had lettuce and mayonnaise, it would truly be the perfect sandwich. You can request to have anything on your sandwich that you like, so maybe asking the cashier when you place your order to add lettuce, mayonnaise and even tomato would help give the sandwich some more character.

There is also a Southern Style Chicken Biscuit that I also bought this morning for my daughter and I for breakfast. It appeared to be quite dry and I was disappointed as I bit into it, that it was very sticky and dry tasting. The chicken pattie had the same taste as the sandwich, there really was no difference there. This would have been perfect with a white sausage gravy smothered on top.

The Southern Style Chicken Biscuit is small, but filling. With a glass of orange juice, you have yourself a complete breakfast.

While it does seem strange to have chicken for breakfast, I have heard that this isn't unusual in the south. It does take time for us northerners to get used to it though.

I would definitely buy the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich again, with some type of sauce though. I doubt I would ever buy the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit again. Chicken in the morning is not my cup of tea, also it was a very dry breakfast sandwich.

With that said, If you are still looking for a good southern style meal, look no further than your local McDonald's for the feel of down home cooking flair.

Putting any condiments on that sandwich would be complete blasphemy.

Stole it from Chick-Fil-A... southern one doesn't taste as good though.

I really like the New Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich . It would be nice to have lettuce and tomato with mayo on it. I eat at McDona;ld about once a week. The sweet tea is also great. I drink alot of that.

I agree, the critic must have never eaten at Chick-Fil-A. It is there "Signature" sandwich.

The southern style chicken sandwich is McDonald's version of the classic Chick-Fil-A sandwich. If you never have had Chick-Fil-A, it's served exactly the same way. The flavors are very close to the same, though Chick-Fil-A is slightly better.

I love Chick-Fil-A, but since I moved to Nevada, I won't be eating it any time soon. This is a very decent attempt at copying that sandwich.

I tend to avoid McDonald's (the whole fat thing again... sigh... just once, I wish I could eat without thinking about it too much first, or suffering for it after!) but this does sound quite good! (who ARE those people leaving misspelled inane comments? Besides me, I mean?!)

Good and honest review, but I don't think I'd take my cravings for Southern cooked food to a McDonald's anytime soon. Cracker barrel and Waffle House seem like more genuine choices in that department. =)
