McFarlane's Monsters Playsets Series 2

McFarlane's Monsters Playsets Series 2 picks up right where the first series left off in providing horror fans a highly detailed, creative and fascinating artistic rendition of some of your favorite characters throughout the times. In Series 2, Todd McFarlane takes on three completely new horror scenes, and expands on one from his first series, as you'll read in this review.

Like the first series, this collection of action figures could be enjoyed by older children, as the horror scenes are not too graphic. After this line however, his figures become much more macabre and grim, and are obviously geared towards older fans and a more mature audience. This set was released in May of 1998, and like the first series consists of six inch figures sold in plastic clamshell packaging.

The first figure in McFarlane's Monsters Playsets Series 2 is the Dr. Frankenstein Playset, an alternative, and in my opinion much better version of the Frankenstein Playset that was created for the first series. This playset features a two-headed Frankenstein who is alive and angry, and a diabolical and twisted human Dr. Frankenstein, equipped with a variety of torturous medical instruments and devices inside his laboratory.

The Mummy Playset in McFarlane's Monsters Playsets Series 2 is a Todd McFarlane's very impressive and highly detailed take on the ancient Egyptian setting; and as to be expecting, it is quite the creation. This set includes both a tomb guardian and a mummy action figure, set in front of a beautifully painted golden Egyptian sarcophagus in the desert.

My favorite playset in this series is The Phantom of the Opera Playset. This is a tall playset, and includes of course the phantom himself, and another figure. The playset itself consists of an enormous pipe organ leading up to a balcony and even features a marvelous chandelier.

Finally we have the Sea Creature Playset, and it is an interesting one in its own right. This playset consists of a wooden dock and the remains of a broken boat, on top of which sits a human diver with a harpoon. Below the dock rests the sea creature, just waiting to strike.

All in all, McFarlane's Monsters Playsets Series 2 is quite interesting, and a highly collectible set in its own right. Personally, I find the first set a little bit more appealing, besides the Dr. Frankenstein Playset - I like the one that is featured in this series even more so than the first rendition.
