My father had surgery on Monday and I wasn't able to get there until that Friday. I spent the week worrying about him. After I arrived, my anxiety was put to rest.
Upon entering the hospital, it almost feels as if you are entering a luxurious hotel in Vegas somewhere. Waterfalls cascade down the middle of the lobby making you instantly feel at ease. Light descends through the five story windows of M.D. Anderson, onto the sofas and chairs that are spread through out the lobby. From up above, patients can look down through the stained glass windows. Security guards are placed at a door checking identification and giving you a sense of security.
Not only does it look comforting, it feels that way too. M.D. Anderson tries to make their patients feel at home as much as possible, by providing them with as many necessities as they can. Their amenities are endless, including meditation rooms on various floors. They're very serene and calming. Chairs are placed strategically around statues, trees, and paintings. Some face the stained glass windows that overlook the lobby.
Computers, internet, and email access is accessible at the Cyber Center. Patients and their families can also borrow TVs, VCRs, and movies to watch. Copy machines, and fax machines are also offered. The first floor even has a post office.
Family members can relax in the lounge. Coffee and water are provided and soda machines are on hand. There are puzzles on the tables and TVs to watch. Patients and their families can play BINGO in the cafeteria. Books, toiletries, and snacks can be bought in the gift shops. And while walking through the halls, you'll pass the wait staff from the cafeteria bringing food to the patients. Dressed as though they just walked out of a five star restaurant, their service is just as professional.
M.D. Anderson's doctor's and nursing staff are incredibly skilled. But what is most important is that they are also very kind and nurturing with their patients. They treat each one as though they are the only patient they have.
Overall, I was very impressed with the quality and care my father received at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital. The hospital staff works diligently in making sure patients and their families are not only well provided for physically, but emotionally as well. Health is not something that is taken for granted, and the doctors and nurses there know that.
