Medal of Honor Releases Without the Taliban

Under pressure from United States military officials and various veteran organizations, Electronic Arts had to go back to the drawing board. The video game manufacturer made changes to their highly anticipated war based game, "Medal of Honor".

"Medal of Honor" is the latest in the series war themed games. This time the game play is set in war -torn Afghanistan. Set to release October 12, 2010, "Medal of Honor" brings an expansive game play to the table with an unheralded 24-player multiplayer format. The change to this installment of the "Medal of Honor" franchise is the ability to fight as the Taliban. In game of the past, players were only able to play as American forces.

This decision has officials calling foul. The Army & Air Force Exchange Service has gone so far as to not permit the stocking of the game. According to Major General Bruce Casella, he saw the move as "respect to those we serve". Casella went on to state he regretted "any inconvenience this may cause authorized shoppers".

After such debated issue, Electronic Arts decided to amend "Medal of Honor" by changing the opposing forces. Taliban will be replaced with "opposing forces". The change is only in the multiplayer. In the single player campaign, gamers will only be able to play as an American.

The executive producer for "Medal of Honor" stated the decision to add Taliban was not willful, intentional, and did not mean to "disrespect' those who have served.

This has not been the first time a war themed game has come under fire by military organizations. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" had similar forces which were similar to the Taliban, without the name. To appease critics, the games developer Activision donated money to the Call of Duty Endowment Fund.

Whether under pressure or not, "Medal of Honor" will be one of the biggest releases of the holiday season. Preorders have already surpassed estimates of the executives.
