When I was pregnant with my first child, I knew I would have to return to work at least part time after the baby was born, and assumed I would pump at work. As a nurse, I had a pretty flexible schedule and the ability to work nights or days if I chose to. But, being on a budget, and a first time mom, I wasn't sure I was willing to part with over two hundred and fifty dollars for a "top of the line" breast pump when there were many other cheaper manual pumps available. I settled on a manual pump for work.
Once our son was born, he latched on and was happily nursing full time for the first 4 months until I returned part time to work. I found pumping to be tedious, time consuming, and wasn't getting great quantities of milk. I chose an inexpensive electrIc pump with similar results, but stubbornly stuck with it until he was a year old.
Then I became pregnant with our second child and I decided that this time I was going to invest in a nice electric pump. I did some research and asked fellow mothers what they had used. The general consensus was that the Medela Pump In Style was the best pump available. I took the plunge, shelled out about two hundred and sixty-eight dollars, and came home with a very classy-looking, black breast pump cleverly disguised as a shoulder bag.
Our second son was born, and I became very engorged after coming home from the hospital. The pump was very easy to set up and once I turned it on, I was amazed at how quickly, efficiently, and painlessly it worked. I was able to pump eight ounces of milk in fifteen minutes. The manual pump had given me about four ounces in thirty minutes, and the small electric pump had not been any better. Also, I found I could choose whether to pump from one breast or from both at the same time. I was thrilled. Not only was it easy and efficient, but it also came with an insulated cooler built right in for storing the milk. Add to that the fact that if any piece of it got lost or broken, it was readily available at the Medela website. I used the pump for a year and a half, and then kept it for my third child. Not once did I have a problem.
It was because of this product that I was able to breastfeed my boys the way I had always wanted to. I found the Medela Pump In Style Double Electric Pump to be a wonderful investment, and have recommended it to many first time mothers. It truly is the best personal pump on the market today.
