Media Hype- Do Cells Phones Cause Brain Tumors?

Katie Sharp-Dierks
According to media headlines, you might take it for granted that cell phones can cause brain tumors. Reading the actual research shows that the link has not been proven, and that improvements in cell phone technology have reduced any risk that may have existed. Beginning with a report on Larry King in 1993, the media frenzy has focused on convincing the public that cell phones are dangerous.

The Larry King Show raises concerns

In 1993, Larry King presented claims that cell phones caused brain tumors. This sparked a defensive statement by cell phone companies that the phones are indeed safe. The radio frequency waves are relatively low, compared to other sources. This has led to many studies of the long term effects of cell phone use.

First study on cell phone use and brain tumors

In 2004, a Swedish study was released suggesting those using a cell phone for over ten years were at an increased risk of brain tumors. However, this same study stated more research was needed, because the study was done on a small sample of people. Media reports used headlines such as "Cell Phones-Tumor link found?" which inflamed fears from the public.

Further research continues the debate; are cell phones safe?

In the last few years, multiple studies have been released regarding the connection between cell phone use and brain tumors. While one study showed changes in brain activity, most of the studies infer that there may be a link. The theory that cell phones may cause brain tumors has not been proven, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself from any possible effects of cellular use.

Ways to reduce any possible risk include using a hands free device, using speaker phone features, and keeping phone calls short. Text messaging when possible is another way to reduce exposure to the radio frequency waves. The idea is to keep the antennae of the phone as far away from your head as possible during use. Avoid using the old analog style phones, as digital phones use far less power and emit fewer radio frequency waves.
