A "baseline" mammogram will start a history from which every year thereafter your gynecologist will have something to compare to. Don't worry if the results came back and they show a repeat mammogram in 6 months. This is only because it was your first and there wan nothing to compare it to. My mom's mammogram came back and she was too dense. There was nothing wrong, she just had to have an MRI to see throughout the density.
Unfortunately the process of getting the mammogram can be extremely painful, I am not going to lie. They have to take your breast and pretty much squish it pulling from the neck bone down. From what I have heard, and the advice that was given to me was that the more they squish you and the more painful it is, the better the technician will be able to read your results. The whole procedure only takes about 20 minutes. You can't have any deodorant or powder on your body. I think it will mess with the results or make it harder to get a good reading for the technician.
I have found a wonderful place to have my mammograms done. It is located at 240 Patchogue Yaphank Rd in Patchogue, NY 11772. The phone number is (631) 475-5300. They have other locations as well. I have also been to their Huntington location for other tests I needed done. If you go to their website, http://www.medicalartsradiology.com, you can see for yourself what they are all about and see which location will be more convenient for you. The other two locations are Bay shore, and Commack.
When I went to both the Patchogue, and the Huntington locations, the staff couldn't be friendlier. They made me feel relaxed and not as worried about the procedure. The office wasn't crowded and I didn't feel embarrassed. Both waiting rooms were clean and had a television for me to watch until they called my name. There were parking lots at both locations. Anytime I had a question, I would just call and the receptionists would always be able to help me. I just made my 6 month follow - up mammogram in the Patchogue office. I m sure I will have a pleasant experience again, except of course for the actual mammogram, ouch!
If you are 35 years old or older and haven't had your "baseline" done yet, it is so important that you call the closest radiology center where you live and make an appointment. You will need to have your gynecologist send you a prescription for what you will exactly need done. Good luck, and remember it takes a preventive step to help keep you and your body healthy. This is your first step, I know it is a scary one but an important one.
