Medical College of Wisconsin Dog Labs Update

The Murder of Innocent Life Continues

Joshua Cook
In a previous article, I wrote about the needless slaughter of dogs taking place at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). The college still uses live dogs, about 60 a year, for teaching methods, even though more humane methods are available at the school. These dogs are then killed at the end of the class. I decided to follow up on the MCW dog labs story, hoping for a happy ending, but, to my dismay, that just was not the case.

According to the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), MCW went through with their live dog labs this year on February 26, 27, and 28. The PCRM does state that the Medical College of Wisconsin has felt great pressure from groups and individuals against the outrageous disregard for living creatures.

On January 25, for example, more than 100 people peacefully protested outside MCW. On February 26, PCRM held another protest with about 60 students in attendance. Two other, smaller protests were held on the following dog lab days. Other successes for PCRM and the American Humane Society have come about:

- To date, MCW has received more than 4,000 e-mails urging the school to cancel the live animal lab program and implement humane alternatives.

- PCRM gave MCW petitions signed by more than 550 physicians around the country who oppose the use of animals in medical education at MCW and other medical schools.

- PCRM garnered extensive media coverage; including news coverage on local radio stations and all four Milwaukee television stations, as well as numerous articles and opinion pieces in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other newspapers.

- In January, PCRM and the Wisconsin Humane Society sponsored a billboard on a Milwaukee freeway that called on motorists to visit http://www.pcrm.org/resch/meded/mcw_doglab/ about the dog lab and humane alternatives.

To give some more insight and possibly answer questions people may have about live animal teaching, the PCRM offers a frequently asked questions page that is filled with useful information. You can also visit a YouTube video that the PCRM has uploaded showing what actually happens to these poor dogs here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6N_aFXMbo1w. One quick note about the video, it is not for persons under the age of 18, or for the squeamish.

With more attention being brought to this subject, and more emails and letters being sent to the Medical College of Wisconsin, addresses are available at the PCRM website, a stop can be brought to this terrible practice.

Horrific! I can't believe things like this go on in a society that is so technologically advanced!

this is ridiculous. i can't believe with how far technology has come people still think this is necessary. it makes me sick.

This happens way too often and it's sickening. Despite criticism and protests, the local animal shelter where I live continues to sell dogs and cats to labs for just this purpose. Good article. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the update, sad as it may be. I am definitely going to email this around.

So they're going to eventually graduate a crop of people that are capable of torturing animals?? I wouldn't want to be seen by a doctor that took part in this program. :(

I wouldn't go so far so as to call it "murder." But I definately agree, "innocent souls" shouldn't be treated so inhumanely! Man is supposed to take care of the animals in their charge. Not treat them as disposable lab tests. I suspect this is going on a lot more than we know. Either way those shot-callers at the lab are reprehensible. Surley there's a more humane way to handle this, like let the doggone things go free and live!
