What are the states that allow patients to be prescribed Medical Marijuana? What about the caregivers of patients who use this are they protected under the law. What medical conditions enable patients in these states to get the medical marijuana?

Currently in the United States, 16 states have laws on the books for Medical Marijuana. Is your state included? On the west coast those states are; Washington State Oregon Nevada, California, and Colorado. On the east coat DC, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Vermont are included. The remaining three states are Alaska, Hawaii, and Michigan. Patients who are prescribed Medical Marijuana are protected under their state laws but not federal laws.

Medical marijuana can help alleviate the pain associated with many types of Cancer, AIDs, IBS (Irritable Bowel syndrome), Fibromyalgia, many forms of Arthritis, Hepatitis C, and Huntington's disease along with many forms of mental depression, Bipolar and PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder). Patients must have one of these conditions or diseases, live in a prescribing state, and be of legal consenting age.

Caregivers in Alaska, California, Colorado, DC, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington State are covered under the law. However to be covered under this law, the patient can only have one caregiver that is covered. Not all caregivers are covered only the primary one is covered. Most of these states allow that caregiver to have only one patient who uses medical marijuana.

One may wonder why a caregiver would be covered under this law, and this provision in the law was created because some patients are not able to administer the medication themselves and the need help. At times medical marijuana is dispensed in pill form, smoked or even in a nebulizer. In the case of the later two, the caregiver would get a contact 'buzz' so they need to be covered under this law because dispensing the medication.

Caregivers must be of legal age in their state and in most cases, they need to be 21. In addition, they cannot have any drug charges on any level. For more information on the caregiver requirements please visit the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws web site.
