Medicare Part D Now Streamlined & Profitable to County Pharmacy Programs

Implications for Seniors

Christine Cadena
Medicare benefits are a vital part of healthcare for senior adults in the United States. While there is much debate over the effectiveness and financial outlook of Medicare, senior adults continue to obtain healthcare needed with Medicare coverage.

With the development of Medicare Part D, seniors are now afforded the opportunity to obtain prescription drug coverage and purchase prescriptions at reduced costs. Using participating pharmacies, the development of the drug coverage benefit, under Medicare Part D, has provided seniors with a decrease in some financial burden. One of the greatest challenges, however, lies in the identification of pharmacies who will accept Part D coverage.

In many county-affiliated pharmacy groups, decisions to participate in Medicare Part D were quite controversial. With many county pharmacy associations opting not to participate in the Medicare Part D coverage, seniors and low-income patients were once forced to fill their prescriptions elsewhere. Finding a great number of patients were leaving the county pharmacy settings, the decision to accept Medicare Part D has now been confirmed leading to greater revenue and health benefits to county citizens.

Part of the complications with Medicare Part D lie in the need to use in-network pharmacies. For patients who are also covered by a secondary pharmacy program, such as Medicaid or gap coverage, the paperwork involved with obtaining dual coverage can be quite intense. In many county pharmacies, however, this paper process has become more streamlined with many pharmacy advocates assisting patients in completing the documents needed.

If you are eligible for Medicare Part D, and you care secondary or dual insurance protection, it is important to understand the financial issues associated with your coverage. You may find that your local pharmacy will not accept both types of coverage, with the primary issue involving the paper intense process to set up a prescription profile for you. If you have access to county pharmacy services, it may be prudent to consider this as an option for your prescriptions. If your county pharmacy once declined working with Medicare Part D, you may find they are now accepting patients and have streamlined their process to allow for more efficient pharmacy services.

Maneuvering through the Medicare program can be challenging. With the development of Medicare Part D, many Medicare recipients found their medications were no longer filled at their local pharmacy, especially when faced with dual coverage issues. With many years now passed since the implementation of Medicare Part D, county pharmacy programs are taking a new approach and even going so far as to assist Medicare patients with the paperwork involved in filling prescriptions.
