Medicinal Trees: Hemlock, Hickory and Ironwood

Medicinal Trees - Hemlock

The hemlock tree, also known as weeping spruce or Canada pitch tree, is one of the oldest and most common of the medicinal trees. The inner bark and leaves of these medicinal trees are used for healing among other things such as making shoe leather.

The leaves of these medicinal trees are used to make a tea for treating canker sores in the mouth, and as a gargle and mouthwash. It increases the flow of urine, heals the kidneys and bladder and also expels gravel in the bladder. It is beneficial for uterine problems, colon problems and diarrhea.

The tea made from these medicinal trees is also a wonderful remedy for gangrene, old sores and ulcers when applied externally to the affected area. The powdered bark is often put into shoes and/or stockings for sore, tender and/or sweaty feet.

Medicinal Trees - Hickory

The hickory tree is among the most well known of the medicinal trees. It is valued not only for its healing properties, but also for its strength and tough wood. It is used for many things where a strong wood is needed, such as making ax handles.

The inner bark and leaves of these medicinal trees are used as a laxative, to purify the system and for washing sores and ulcers. They can also be used for diarrhea and colitis. A tablespoonful steeped in a pint of boiling water for fifteen minutes can be used for any of the above conditions.

For internal use, the tea made of these medicinal trees should be made by steeping one teaspoon full of the bark or leaves in one cup of boiling water. After thirty minutes, strain and drink from one to three cups per day.

Medicinal Trees - Ironwood

The ironwood tree, also known as lever wood, is one of the best medicinal trees. The inner bark and the inner red wood of the medicinal trees are used. To use these parts, they must be shaved or cut into small chips and boiled for fifteen minutes.

These medicinal trees make a wonderful tonic and blood purifier. The tea is very beneficial for stomach problems of all kinds. It can be used to treat fever, scrofula and as a nerve tonic.
