Medicines that Treat Osteoporosis

Diet, exercise, and vitamins are very important in maintaining healthy bones. Sometimes, though, this is not enough and your doctor will prescribe you medications that he thinks is right for you body. There are many things to think about when you start taking a new medicine, such as side effects. Some medicines may have short term side effects and some have long term. Make sure you think about all the necessary precautions before you start taking any medications and talk to your doctor about your worries.

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate that reduces the activity of cells that cause bone loss, decreases the faster rate of bone loss, and increases the amount of bone in most patients. Fosamax Plus D is the only treatment that has Vitamin D, which helps to absorb calcium and build strong bones. Different people have to take Fosamax for different amounts of time. Only your doctor can tell you when to stop taking Fosamax. If you have kidney disease, low blood calcium, or esophagus disorders, do not take Fosamax. Possible side effects are developing heartburn, having problems swallowing, chest pain, or Jawbone problems. Stop use and let your doctor know immediately if you have any of these symptoms.

Boniva is another prescription medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. It can help to maintain your bone density as well as reverse bone loss. Boniva is for women and should only be taken once a month. You should make sure that you take Boniva as it is prescribed, or Boniva won't work properly for you. The most common side effects with Boniva are diarrhea, upset stomach, and soreness of arms and legs. These side effects are usually mild to moderate. If you feel any trouble breathing, chest pain, or heartburn, stop taking and call your doctor immediately. It is very rare that people report these serious side effects. Talk more with your doctor to see if Boniva is right for you.

Reclast is a FDA approved, once a year treatment for osteoporosis. It is administered by a nurse or physician through an IV, and with this treatment you don't have to sit upright or wait 30 minutes or more to eat like you do with Boniva and Fosamax. Daily calcium and vitamin D is still necessary even when taking Reclast. Flu like symptoms are the most common side effects with Reclast. More serious side effects include problems and pain in the jaw and tooth areas. These have hardly been reported, but make sure you tell you doctor immediately if you are having these problems.
