Meditate on You

Create a Space to Reflect Without Going to Church

S Renee Greene

1) Pick out a peaceful area in your home or space that is attractive to you. Back in the day, the Big Mama's place of choice was sometimes her closet, or her "prayer closet." From there, she called on Doctor Jesus ( Come On In My Room ) and things started to change once she was on her knees.

2) Clear the space physically, then spiritually. There is a common belief that a space can be cleared out by burning a bit of sage for about five minutes. It helps to clear out the negative vibes that have sat and accumulated and sulked for too long because they were allowed. Move the stuff, then move the "bad" spirits by purging with sage.

3) Bring in a fresh chair or pillow on which to sit. Clear the space, cleanse it, then scoot over the troubles of your mind by sitting Indian style, yoga style, or just in a straight back chair'"not too relaxing. This is not nap time, it's reflection time. Sitting straight up puts some people to sleep, but not most. Do a deep breathing exercise (Google one if you don't know which one to do), and then invite in a new set of thoughts. Stop thinking for three minutes, and then bring in a whole new set of thoughts for two minutes. Keep up this think/dismiss pattern for at least 30 minutes, or six times. Re-fill the mind space with a vision of what that room would look like if it were a church cathedral or sanctuary.

Besides, the chair or pillow, bring in a tea light or a votive, a glass or crystal vase, a small bunch of real or silk flowers, a wall hanging that you love that inspires you, a nice colorful or solid rug*, a beautiful rock or dried leaf you found outside, a book of inspiration or poetry, a wooden or metallic bowl and spoon to beat on if the mood inspires you, and some very very "inside voice" inspirational music. Don't clutter, just think small pieces and bring; even if you bring only one piece at a time until the other pieces fit like a resolved puzzle. *Try an eco-friendly rug from FLOR (http://www.flor.com/). They even let you go online and create your own with the FLORBuilder tool.

There is no need to "zen" or Feng Shui or over-think or over-analyze this space; just do what feels natural for your own desires. Earth's favorite colors are green, brown, blue, black, white, silver, and purple, and a few slivers of purple hues here and there.

4) When everything is just right, one piece at a time, take off your shoes and enter the sacred space of the room and in your own heart. You know yourself better than you think you do. If you are still trying to figure it out, be still and say and think nothing at all. It will come. Not "Listen up, world, I'm talking," but rather "Speak, for your servant is listening."

Praying without words : Acknowledge creation and majestic sovereignty over it. Pay homage to, but do not worship, the universe. The only faith that works is the action that goes with it. As the old African proverb goes, " When you pray, move your feet ." Your prayers are engaged on activation. For example, if you cut your grass and "accidentally" slip over and cut your neighbor's grass while you're at it, you've said a prayer in your heart, and probably answered one, too. Your heart likes to sip tea from the cup of heaven and nothing is more refreshing than to act on what you believe.

Once your in-home sanctuary and place of reflection and meditation is established and furnished according to your soul's inner inspiration, you will never need a reminder to go there. It will draw you in at the needful times, and often, it will draw you in just because it's there.
