Meditation is Beneficial to Our Daily Lives

S. B.
Have you ever been so stressed out that you just needed a breather? Just a few minutes to take some breaths alone in a quiet room? Believe it or not, during that time, you were practicing a form of meditation, where you take time to yourself in a quiet place and release your thoughts through deep breathing. When you think about it this way, meditation doesn't sound as foreign or weird as you once thought, does it? Well in this article, we'll take a closer look at meditation, what it entails, and how it can be beneficial to your life.

What is Meditation?

Depending on the type of meditation you inquire about (and there are many out there), you may receive different definitions regarding exactly what it is. But the overall concept of meditation that seems to bridge most styles and techniques is that it is the practice of deep breathing that calms the mind and body, thus giving access to the soul - a way to give yourself complete communication with your inner world and create a more defined relationship with your intuitive, spiritual self.

Why would you want to do that, you ask?

Again, many people offer different reasons. But the one that works for me is that over the years I've discovered a general disconnect between my mind, body, and soul. I have more closely identified with the outside world, seeking money, power, and external pleasures more than inner peace. However, in time, I realized that no one thing or person could make me happier than I could make myself, thus forcing me to take time to develop a relationship with Me. The only way I've been truly successful in accomplishing this task is be turning my attention inward and digging deep on a quest of knowledge of Self. And meditation has been a great vehicle for helping me travel down this introspective path.

Forms of Meditation

The form of meditation I take part in is a blend of Western and Eastern meditation. Eastern (or for many, Buddhist) meditation, is the art of using breathing techniques to reach spiritual enlightenment. In this art, you take part in intense concentration and isolation with the basic agenda of clearing the mind to reach universal evolution.

Western meditation, on the other hand, is usually more focused on breathing exercises meant to help you reach a temporary level of calm and enable you to function peacefully through the rat race of Western society. Because I live and function in Western society, it is important to be able to settle my mind and prepare for an "anything can happen" kind of day. But ultimately, I hope to evolve spiritually so that functioning in a hectic society is no longer an issue for me.

How You Can Benefit from Meditation

As mentioned in the opening paragraph of this article, you probably already practice some form of meditation unknowingly through your personal calming techniques. However, getting proactive and setting aside 30 - or even 15 - minutes to be by yourself and breath can help to rejuvenate your mind, calm your spirit, and get you prepared for a long day. You'll be surprised at how amazing you feel after taking deep breaths for even 5 minutes. You'll have more energy, a more positive attitude about your interactions with others, and a sharper mind for getting work done.

So why not take time to learn more about meditation? There are so many forms available that there is certain to be one you can identify with. And with the end result being the possibility of internal peace, what do you have to lose?
