Meditation for Peace -1

T. Ramaswamy
To be happy one will find it helpful to meditate on the Ultimate Reality. This means stretching one's mind to the farthest. One can be happy or unhappy at the mental level, can have comfort or discomfort at the body level and have peace or disturbance at the intellectual level. Physical exercises have lot to do with mental and psychic development. Inhalation, exhalation, holding breath, control of diet and food help the mind and intellect to attain purity. Every successful human being practices self-control. Such persons protect themselves from distractions. They adopt different ways of economizing energy and preventing dissipation of mental energy. This is Royal wisdom or Royal secret. It is the Royal science of living.

It is the most effective purifier. The mind and intellect have no source of disturbance. Mankind should move to a higher plane of consciousness. There should not be any vacillation. All living beings have to be looked with reverence and respect. This needs consistency of effort. Meditation enables us to turn the attention of the mind and intellect in a specific angle. It demands total surrender to the Lord. Having known and become that state which is a permanent experience one never returns to the lower nature. One should aim to be happy and contented. For this meditation is helpful and the body has to be maintained in good health. This is achieved through a series of physical exercises combining breathing.

Setting apart some time daily in the morning preferably for meditation brings great benefit ensuring a calm mind. Choose a quiet place. Sit erect, close your eyes and breathe normally after deep inhaling and exhaling a few times. Inhale and fill the lungs with air. Observe moderation in eating and food habits and sleep. . The place chosen should be clean and peaceful. This can be inside the home, outside in the open visualizing a mountain or an ocean or the Sun. Bring the flow of thoughts to that object which you have firmly fixed in your mind. Think about the glory of that object. Ignore if all sorts of thoughts interfere and disturb your thought flow in the desired direction. In course of time and with steady practices this will be all right.

The unique nature of man is that he alone has the faculty of discrimination. He alone is endowed with the capacity to realize the Ultimate truth. which is the changeless knowledge .By constant practice we find the complete merger of the principle with the individual, merging into one and this enables solutions to all problems of the world? Thus is beautifully stated in the Shanthi Mantra of the Hindus .This when translated says, "Let us both be protected. Let both of us enjoy together. Let what is given to us become glorious. Let there be no hatred. O Peace. Peace Peace". Humans face three types of sorrow. The first one is natural calamities. The second one is from external objects and the third one from within which has spiritual orientation.(To be continued)
