Meditation - Simple Helpful Rules

Chris Yee
Meditation is one of the best forms of relaxation. Practicing meditation can increase your awareness, focus, concentration and reduce your stress levels. Meditation also helps you think clearly, giving you a more positive outlook on life. Meditation is easy and convenient because no equipment or special place is necessary to practice. Anyone who wants to relax, take off some stress or just clear their mind can enjoy meditation. It is not just for monks or mystics.

The main focus of meditation is to remove all wondering, obstructive and negative thoughts. Meditation removes all those thoughts and replaces your mind with deep focus and clarity. It is then the mind can prepare for an enhanced quality of activity. Picture you mind as a glass of Coke. On a daily basis, your mind is clouded with negative and obstructive thoughts about your co-workers, bills, screaming kids and chores. Meditation allows you to cleanse your mind from all these thoughts, not just forget about them. With meditation, your mind is able to focus on more meaningful and constructive thoughts. Some extreme forms of meditation include detachment from all sensory input. This helps keep any distraction and attachment from this world at a minimum. Your mind is able to concentrate on deeper thoughts.

When meditating, you can be in any comfortable position. You can sit cross-legged, stand up, or lay down. Each person is unique and so is the meditation style. However, the most common position is sitting down cross-legged. If you are sitting down to meditate, you want to be in a comfortable position that allows you to remain focused. Keep your back straight. Slouching is a position in which you may fall asleep. Find a quiet room you are comfortable in to meditate. Avoid any distracting noises or images. Pleasant smells may facilitate meditation as they have a soothing and calming effect. Meditation has been depicted on television and movies as someone humming or repeating a monotone sound. This method of meditation is believed to be an ancient form. Monks and mystics would chant a mantra while focusing on the meaning of the chant. It allows the person to focus more clearly on meaningful and deep thoughts. However, repeating a mantra or chanting is not necessary for meditation. Yet, concentrating on repetitive actions, such as breathing and chanting, can help you attain a higher level of focus.

The most important thing in meditation is concentration. Concentrating on an object or thought focuses and relaxes the mind. Meditation can be a fun process. You don't have to just sit there, close your eyes and focus. It is a risk-free activity with many healthy benefits. Meditation is a way to escape from the everyday commotion and enter a personalized utopia. I know meditating will help you find your inner-self and will positively reduce much of your everyday stress.
