Mediterranean Gate is known for their large variety of Middle Eastern cuisine, centering around falafels. When you first enter the shop, you will notice that it is not very large. Presented before you will be a glass case where the toppings are all laid out. If you are unfamiliar with the types of toppings that go with the khobez, or naan bread wrap, then this glass case may present itself as more of a problem than a healthy selection of delicious foods. However, the staff members are all very helpful and friendly and will be more than welcome to offer suggestions or answer any questions you may have.
Typical toppings include hummus (mashed chickpeas), baba ghanouj (cooked eggplant), and plenty of others, along with falafel. For those of you unfamiliar with what a falafel is, it is primarily made of mashed chickpeas and is deep-fried and usually served with pita or naan bread. At the Mediterranean Gate, you can have a wrap that includes falafel along with a number of other toppings.
A typical wrap is sold at around 4 to 5 pounds sterling. The price is not the lowest in town for a falafel, but for the quality you get, the price is just right. The wraps are made right in front of you with care and patience. Once the initial wrap is set up, you are asked for the types of sauces and toppings you would like to add. The preparation style is reminiscent of a Subway Restaurant, but instead of being ushered down a line of food, Mediterranean Gate presents all of the toppings in one view so that you are taken care of at a more personal, one-on-one level.
There is also a fridge that offers a selection of drinks.
Though there are not many seats inside Mediterranean Gate, it is perfectly alright to order your food to-go, as the wrapped style of the falafel-based food makes it easy to take and eat on the go.
The next time you find yourself in Edinburgh looking for some good quality falafel wraps, check out Mediterranean Gate for a nice treat.
