Meet Award Winning Journalist and Interviewer Charlie Rose

Why PBS' Charlie Rose Soars with Critics and Viewers Alike

M.G. Hardiman
Many years ago, I stumbled upon Charlie Rose and began watching his superb show on public television. Since that time, I haven't looked back. I'm positively enthralled by his exceptional interviews with some pretty extraordinary people. I also like his production values. His nightly show seems more like a conversation rather than impersonal Q&A, making it an intimate experience for viewers, indeed.

What else makes Charlie Rose's nightly PBS program so special? I would say it's his incredible guest list. From world class thought leaders, authors and scientists to super talented athletes, musicians, journalists, actors, business people and more, Charlie Rose soars for engaging conversations with some of the biggest newsmakers and leaders of our time. From Tony Blair, Gerry Adams and Elie Weisel to Neil Young, Jay Z and Kate Winslet, it's always interesting, important, vibrant and never dull.

North Carolina Roots and Big City On Air Journalism

Born in 1942 and raised in North Carolina, Charlie Rose thought medical school was in his immediate future only to veer into politics after a timely internship with Democratic North Carolina Senator B. Everett Jordan. After attaining his degree in history from Duke University in 1964, he went on to secure his law degree, also from Duke. His solid background in history, political science and the law would serve him well going forward.

Rose moved to New York and freelanced a bit with BBC. Later, while working for Bankers Trust, he moonlighted as a weekend reporter. This certainly enabled him to develop his television skills and know how. In 1974, Bill Moyers hired Rose as managing editor for the PBS program, Bill Moyers' International Report. Later, Rose became its producer. From time to time, Rose appeared on air but it wasn't until his installment "A Conversation with Jimmy Carter" won a Peabody Award that Rose's interview skills caught the public eye. Eventually, Rose landed a job as a program manager in Dallas where he secured a late-night time slot that would become the legendary Charlie Rose show. Since that time, he was named correspondent on the short-lived news magazine 60 Minutes II as well as 60 Minutes itself.

Charlie Rose's Enduring Appeal

Between his nightly PBS show and specials, Charlie Rose has caught on with an important segment of the American public, those looking for smart, innovative, and engaging television. After all, where else can you find a leading architect talking about his craft one night and Patti Smith the next? 20 years and counting, I wouldn't miss his nightly show on PBS or his specials for the world. Neither should you.
