The next chance I get, I'm going to meet and marry a guy just like John Groff. Here's why.
John Groff has no computer, and he uses no cell phone. "Technology makes life a lot easier [but] it does not change my life at all," he says of the stuff most of us can't live without. I admire someone who refuses to get baited, hooked, and totally dependent on a bunch of beeping electronic devices.
John Groff served in the military and is now a fireman. "I was in the army and ... got to be a first lieutenant." Later, he joined a fire squad and remains an active member. Oh, and in between, he managed to marry two ladies (one at a time, of course) and managed to outlive them both, in between.
John Groff is a working man. In a long and varied career, John sold insurance, worked in a steel company, a paper box factory, even Maytag, the company that makes washing machines so good they never need repair. Through thick and thin, through good times and bad, John brought home the bread from his own efforts alone. No government handouts for a guy like John.
John Groff is an Easterner. He was born in eastern Pennsylvania and spends family time in New Jersey. When a guy grows up in these states, you've got to respect the gritty fortitude that develops from a lifetime of living there. I'm a New Jersey native. I can relate.
But the biggest attraction for somebody like me to a guy like John Groff are his cars!
"My first car was a 1928 Auburn Speedster. I must have been in my early 20s when I bought it second-hand for $800. It sold new for $2,800." I want to know a guy who got a big bad red car for less than a 'large' in Nu Joisey.
Besides, John now has a dark red 2007 Corvette, after a few others he had a few years before. Do you think he'd trust me to drive it fast? I'd settle for a slow ride down the Turnpike in a red-blooded arrest-me-red American V8 with John Groff!
Oh, and did I mention he had a birthday last month? John Groff turned 100 and is the oldest Corvette owner still driving his Corvette today!
Say happy birthday to John, all together now...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN GROFF!
