SM- Give us a quick background check. Where are you from and how did you find your way to New York?
TB- I'm from Vancouver, Island B.C. in Canada. In a nutshell.... came to New York expecting to visit someone that I had met in Vancouver and ended up having my wallet stolen 2 days before 911...I was kind of marooned, and ended up getting a job and staying. I didn't really want to leave and then decided that maybe I was supposed to stay.....
SM- Well, maybe so? I love your song, Homeward Bound. What inspired you to write it?
TB- (continued from question one) Which leads me to "Homeward Bound" I just recently put two and two together that I had stolen the title!!! oops...It was fall and just starting to get cold. I hate the cold. So, I was not in a very good mood. Kinda trying to figure out where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to be doing. I've always moved around A LOT usually never staying in a place longer than a year or two. I think this was right around the time that I would normally move on (or back). My parents were traveling on a motor home for about 3 years, so my home where I grew up didn't exist anymore. It felt weird so I wrote a sob story song about it;)
SM- Again, the song is amazing! So, tell me a little about Bar 4.
TB- Ahhh bar 4. My home away from home. It's been my hangout for pretty much 4 years. Me and the bartender, Greg, decided that we would hold an open mic there every Tuesday night, so we did, at first it was just a few good friends and it slowly grew into one of the most amazing scenes of local musicians that you will find in NY. Jessi Robertson soon came up with the idea of hosting showcases there, and Local Correspondents was born (for more info on that go to www.localcorrespondents.com). Um ya, sidetracked, bar 4 is the cozy, warm, BLACK HOLE (yes be careful, once you sit on its couches you may never leave!) where you will find the most inviting, friendly, and hilarious bartenders filling you with whatever frosty beverage suits you...they have really great jazz nights there on Sundays and Mondays as well....oh ya, and all of this has landed me a job behind the bar there on Friday nights:)
SM- So it sounds like you are a "Jane of all trades"? Who do people tell you that you sound like?
TB-As I learn to find my own voice people tell me different things. I've pretty much heard everything, as I'm sure most female singer/songwriters have. I'd say what I hear the most is, The Cranberries, Natalie Merchant, that girl from Portishead, and some people think that my happier tunes remind them of a Nick Drake type vibe. Mostly people tell me that I really sound like me. I am definitely not a trained or polished singer, very raw...
SM- Well I love your sound, raw is a great adjective to describe your voice. Genuine! Last question, where can we find you playing in the coming months?
TB- I usually keep my shows to once a month. I play with all sorts of different talented musicians that make me sound good. Greg Touhey (Seems so Bright), Tarrah Reynolds (EVERYBODY), Crash (Lowry), etc...
My next show is on March 26th at Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan...you can see my schedules at myspace.com/buziak or www.tanyabuziak.net.....
yay. I don't really have anything recorded in the past years. I am looking to record with a producer named Kramer in April. Looking forward to that....ok that's it....
Awesome! I would like to thank Tanya for taking the time to answer my questions before heading off to work! As you can tell, this girl is true and very talented. I recommend her music to anyone who likes good grooves and cool vibes. Her lyrics will make your mind wonder and your soul soar!!
