What or who would you make the new mascot for Ole Miss? The Mascot Selection Committee wants to know. For that reason, they have decided to hold a series of meetings for input from the university family. Here is your opportunity to be a part of this decision.

Ever since Ole Miss eliminated the Colonel Reb several years ago, there has been no school mascot. Many alumni and students have voiced their ideas for possibilities, everything from admirals to science fiction characters. Now, it's time to put all this creativity into action.

Therefore, the Mascot Selection Committee will be holding meetings to gather input from the Ole Miss students, faculty, staff and alumni. The committee is looking for suggestions and opinions on possible mascot ideas. The ideas presented will then be considered, and eventually those chosen will be presented for a vote.

Since there are several different dates and locations, hopefully, anyone wishing to participate will be able. Unfortunately, meetings will be limited to 30 people, so reservations are required.

Below are the meeting dates and locations:

May 18 in Memphis, TN

May 20 in Jackson, MS

May 21 in Biloxi, MS; and

Two meetings on May 19 in Oxford, MS at 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Mascot Selection Committee Co-chairman Ty New thinks this will be a great way for the whole Ole Miss community to have a say in selecting what or who the next mascot should be for Ole Miss. The mascot chosen will represent Ole Miss at several athletic and other events.

Rickabaugh Graphics with be working with the University to develop the idea into a mascot proposal which will then be presented to the public. Rickabaugh Graphics has worked with many universities in developing mascots and logos.

Remember that the meetings will be limited to 30 people, so reservations need to be made as quickly as possible by contacting Lynda Walker in the Alumni Office at 662-915-7375. Information is also available at mascot.olemiss.edu.

So put on those thinking caps, make your reservations early, so Ole Miss can get that mascot chosen and rooting for the Ole Miss teams.

At a focus group, one person suggested King Rebel. On the way out, several of us suggested "The Rebel KIng", a lion. Perhaps music from the film could be used. His crown could have the 6 columns like the Lyceum. He could be a dancer and do simple routines that the crowd could join in.

Sigh. When will it all stop.

I hate that PC forces us to give up cherished relics. As a Redskin's fan I await the raping of that tradition too! When I will really know we've gone too damned far is when my alma mater, NC State, has to change our mascot and team names from "Wolfpack" because wolves will file suit and claim we are bigoted against them.

I wonder when the Washington Redskins and some others will be renamed. That's one of my son-in-law's favorite teams, and he, incidentally, is half Cherokee. He thinks all the hooplaw about such names is ridiculous, and I'm sure most like him would agree. By the way, would an "Old Miss" be called a spinster? ((:>))

Interesting article, Pattie and an interesting approach to choosing a mascot for the Univ. of Mississippi. Cheers!
