Here's how it works. The website is organized so that you can browse local meet ups by location or topic. If you wanted to start with location, then you would pick the Canadian territory, state or country that works best for you. Then you can choose among nineteen various categories, such as hobbies or finance, and narrow it down to topics that appeal to you. For instance if you were interested in joining a book club you could choose "books" as a category, pick "classics" as a topic and join a meet up in your local area that discusses classical books.
You have the option of uploading a photo and posting an introductory message when you join the site, or you can just wait to meet everyone in person during the group's weekly or monthly meet ups. The meetings are posted online on the website but you can also have event reminders sent to your email address so you don't forget. You can pick and choose which events you would like to go to and "RSVP" so that the group organizer can make the necessary arrangements. Most of the group leaders email their phone numbers to the people who RSVP "yes" so they can call for directions to the event in case they get lost.
Each meet up group has an individual page that describes when the group was founded, if there is a fee for a certain event (most of them are free), the number of meet ups the group has had in the past, and how many members they currently have. Once you've joined the group you have access to their calendar of events, a full roster of members, photos from past events and a message board to post new topics and ideas. You can also upload files to the website that are relevant and beneficial to the group. There is also a link that allows you to invite friends to join a local meet up group that you know they would like. If for some chance you don't see any meet ups you like (which is highly improbable due to the sheer volume of them) you can start your own.
Meetup.com is the perfect place to go if you are looking to break up the routine in your life. There are enough categories and interests so that everyone could find something that they enjoy or would like to discover.
