Meg Whitman Bids $140 Million, Loses California
Jerry Brown Snipes Governorship
Maybe it was the message! Meg kept saying Jerry was a big spender, while we remember that he never moved into the governor's mansion. Jerry rented a modest apartment and drove an old blue Plymouth. But Meg kept calling Jerry a Biig Spender...even as she was pulling out her checkbook again and again to buy advertising time.
Maybe it was the insult! She kept telling Californians that we were stupid to elect Brown twice before. Sorry, but insulting people while you ask for their vote just might be a poor approach.
Maybe it was the way she threw her housekeeper under the bus, when she had known for years that the woman was an undocumented worker.
But it just might be that Californians just don't want their highest office "For Sale to the Highest Bidder": Or maybe, being a newbie to politics, maybe Meg thought she would get her $140-million back if she didn't win the auction, just like on Ebay. Sorry.
She could have learned a lesson from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who now polls BELOW the man he threw out of the Governor's office, Gray Davis. Ah-nold thought he could do a better job than Davis, after blaming Davis for the California Energy Crisis. (Then it turned out Ken Lay and Enron were responsible for that fiasco)
Now there's a very good chance that the Governor who signed his name to my diploma from San Diego State University, will be there to sign his name to my son's diploma over three decades later!
