Mega Millions Lottery Results Approach Historic Realm

Robert Dougherty
The Mega Millions lottery results have been the same for weeks. For 14 straight times, the Mega Millions lottery results have left the jackpot unclaimed, and left several players just short of taking it. While many have racked up $250,000 second prizes, the grand prize has gotten bigger and bigger. Now that it remains large heading into 2011, the year may start with the most historic jackpot of all time. If the Mega Millions lottery results remain the same over the next week, they will reach uncharted territory.

Last night, $242 million was on the line in the year's last drawing. But when no one got the winning numbers of 10, 12, 13, 35 and 56 - with the Mega Ball at 9 - it ended the same as the previous 13. Yet again, the giant jackpot remained unclaimed, and would once more become larger.

Thanks to last night's Mega Millions lottery results, the pot is up to $290 million. What's more, it will probably increase again before Tuesday's drawing, as more and more players try to make history. If one of them finally gets a perfect ticket, he or she would have the biggest individual jackpot of all time.

The greatest grand prize of all time was a $390 million jackpot in 2007. Two players split it, and got a lump sum payment of $116 million. Tuesday night's lump sum option will be worth $182 million, which would also surpass the $175 million lump sum total won in 2005, by a group called "The Lucky Seven"

Although the Mega Millions lottery results are the most prolific in the country right now, Powerball's records are being threatened as well. The largest Powerball jackpot was $365 million in 2006, which was split by six Nebraska meat packers. They took the cash option of $177 million, which set the record in the United States until now.

The biggest individual winner in Powerball history was a West Virginia man in 2002, who won a $314.9 million drawing, and took the lump sum of $170 million. He is the only individual to win a jackpot worth over $300 million in the lottery, even though he actually took home less than a few others.

If the next Mega Millions lottery results have no big winner, then the grand prize will sour over $300 million, and likely approach the 350 mark. Then if no player wins next Friday, it could approach a record-setting $400 million. At that point, all lottery records would be threatened without question.

No matter what the future lottery results are for Mega Millions, they are already setting a bar that the rest of 2011 may not catch. For that matter, the bar might soon be set higher than in any time in lottery history.
