American Idol: Week 1 Results

...And then there were eleven.

When it came to who was safe and who was in danger of being sent home, there were no surprises based on the performances from Tuesday night's show of "American Idol". But before any singers knew who was safe, the group performed a medley of songs made famous by the Jackson 5.

At the one-third mark of the show, Megan Joy Corkley and Jasmine Murray found themselves standing in the center of the sate waiting for host Ryan Seacrest to announce who would not be returning to the show. Mississippi teen Jasmine Murray is the first contestant to be voted off of "American Idol" in season 8.

Later it was Jorge Nunez and Anoop Desai who were standing in the center of the stage but they had to wait for "American Idol's" first winner Kelly Clarkson to sing her new single. Puerto Rican Jorge Nunez became the second contestant to go home in week one. Ryan Seacrest announced that Kelly Clarkson is the first of many former "Idols" to return to the show since each week fans will see an "Idol" return.

Following a tradition over the past few seasons the exit song is being sung by a former "Idol" contestant. This year it's season four winner and Grammy Award winning country star Carrie Underwood performing a cover of the Motley Crue song "Home Sweet Home". Underwood has state that a portion of the song profits will go to the US Humane Society.

The big surprise of the evening was in the new rule that was instituted this season in the wake of what some people thought was the early exit of former "American Idol" contestants Tamyra Gray, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, and Michael Johns. Until the top five contestants are left the judges now have the opportunity to "save" a singer from elimination. Once the singer with the lowest votes is revealed the four judges can vote to keep that singer. But all four judges must agree before a singer can be saved and each singer can be saved only once. No singers were saved on the first results show of season 8 of "American Idol". In the event a singer is saved from elimination, then two singers will be chosen for elimination the following week. The season is set for "American Idol" and no shows will be added to accommodate extra contestants or "saved" singers.

I love Anoop, and my heart breaks for what is happening with him on Idol. If you are a fan or on the fence about Anoop please visit the AI forum / Idolforum to learn more about Anoop (or search him on the utube "clefhangers Anoop" for performances). On the forums you can read about Anoop, and the manipulation currently happening around Anoop by producers for ratings. As far as the 'manipulation' peice, please know that I HATE conspiracy theories and don't use the word lightly. Its only after hours of reading articles from die hard AI critics/analysts, past contestants, and others that I come to that conclusion with a clear conscience. I can say that I am now placing AI in the same category as Jerry Springer and such shows that have very little value for the integrity of its guests or viewers. It is my adoration for some of the contestants, and desire to support their success that I still watch the show. Again I'm not trying to rag on Idol or people who love Idol, its just the conclusio
