Meghan McCain Twitter Photo Makes Her a "Slut"?

Meghan McCain posted a Twitter photo of herself around 8 p.m. Wednesday night. In the following several hours, Meghan McCain would be defending herself and the photo from attacks, including ad hominem attacks accusing her of being a "slut." The daughter of John McCain, who has been no stranger to controversy in her public and private lives, found herself embroiled in a Twitter war of words over the fact that she had posted a photo of herself in a pajama top -- a rather low-cut black tank top.

The Meghan McCain Twitter photo and the story of the Twitter photo has caught fire. Meghan McCain, after arguing and debating and sniping back and forth for a few hours finally apologized, stating that she had not meant to offend anyone with her picture and that she had made a "huge mistake."

But had she?

A quick look at the "offensive" Twitter photo shows a smiling Meghan McCain in a revealing decolletage, an Andy Warhol biography crushed against her breasts. She informed her Twitter followers that she was going to enjoy a "spontaneous" night in with the Warhol book and takeout. She added that she was "getting old."

End of story, or it should have been. But then she started getting tweets from followers condemning her photo. Apparently wearing a tank top that shows a little cleavage is verboten among conservatives, even those that follow "pro-sex" Meghan McCain, who has been known to espouse a few liberal views along with her conservatism.

In her own defense, Meghan McCain wrote "[When] I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweatpants. I had no idea this makes me a 'slut,' I can't even tell you how hurt I am."

But Meghan McCain looks to be a victim of those judgmental moralists she has attempted to distance herself from in her political columns and her very public comments about the state of the Republican Party. At times, Meghan McCain seems more liberal than conservative, like, for instance, when she took on conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham after she called McCain "plus-size" while sniping at her views. In an appearance on "The View," McCain told her critics to "kiss (her) fat ass!"

Meghan McCain has maintained she is not old school conservative, but the question must be asked: Does showing a little cleavage in a Twitter photo qualify her for "slut" status? One should hardly think so. In fact, the photo isn't risqué, racy, or trashy. It is simply a picture of Meghan McCain in a low-cut tank top. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Some are reading far more into her photo than it necessitates. It certainly isn't an indication that the daughter of Senator John McCain is a person of low morals or high promiscuity. It is simply a Twitter photo.

Much ado about nothing? Seems like it.

Meghan McCain is a young lady, 24 years old and a moving force within the young conservative crowd and the Republican Party. That she should be attacked by many of her own followers on Twitter should come as no shock but it does convey something she has said before: "I don't think twittering is going to convince people that the Republican party is cool."

If the reaction to her Twitter photo is any indication, she is absolutely correct. That reaction was definitely not cool.

Many of her followers are conservative. And some are old school Republicans. And some are prone to the judgmental moralizing that has put them at odds with so many of the moderate and younger conservatives -- like Meghan McCain.

But should she have apologized? Should she have even felt the need to apologize? Not for any discernible reason outside the lunatic fringe. There was nothing offensive in her Twitter photo or in the tweet that accompanied it (unless you count the Warhol book).

So the Senator's daughter has cleavage. It was just a photo.

Get over it.
