Meghan McCain has gotten herself into a bit of trouble with some of her fans and some of her detractors after posting a picture of herself on Twitter in a tank top. As the New York Daily News reported, The Daily Beast columnist ran afoul of quite a few on Twitter -- some 60,000 tweets were sent her way in the following hours after her 8 p.m. post -- after the racy photo was placed on Twitter. Many of Meghan McCain's followers are conservatives, and she found herself embroiled in defending herself, the picture, and her lifestyle before simply giving up and apologizing. Many believe it was calculated for publicity but Meghan McCain has never needed a racy photo or a picture of her in a tank top to cause a stir and garner a little publicity within (and without) the conservative ranks.

What was so terrible about Meghan McCain's Twitter picture? It shows her in a black low-cut tank top with an Andy Warhol biography. She mentions with her photo posting that she will enjoy a "'spontaneous' night in" with the book and takeout. She adds, "I'm getting old."

The avalanche of Twitter traffic that fell her way in response to the Twitter picture the next few hours no doubt kept her from her Warhol.

Being the daughter of a prominent Senator and presidential candidate, Meghan McCain has had no problem making headlines whenever she does something -- no matter how non-eventful it might at first seem. But when she does something somewhat questionable, the media has run with it. She has had no problem butting heads with her conservative followers in the past over issues and Wednesday night's Twitter picture proved to be another such issue.

Some questioned her motives. Some were simply outraged. Some flat-out called her a "slut."

"[When] I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweatpants," she tweeted, "I had no idea this makes me a 'slut,' I can't even tell you how hurt I am."

But in the end, her photo having been viewed over a 100,000 times, Meghan McCain apologized. "I do want to apologize to anyone that was offended by my twitpic. I have clearly made a huge mistake and am sorry 2 those that are offended."

Meghan McCain has been criticized for less than modest approach to conservatism. As she has been seen as a spokesperson for young conservatives, she has also become a target for older conservatives. Appearing on "The View" in March, she responded to a critical comments by conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham and others about her being "plus-size" by stating, "I'm like, 'Kiss my fat ass!"

She asked the ladies of "The View," " What kind of message are we sending young women? It infuriates me. I'm a political writer on a blog, and all of a sudden I'm too fat to write?"

She also raised eyebrows in May when she appeared on "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert and inadvertently told the faux conservative newsman/pundit that she was "pro-sex" and "pro-gay marriage." She self-consciously squealed that her father was going to see her. She also revealed on the same show that she didn't "think twittering is going to convince people that the Republican party is cool."

Depending on one's take on her Twitter picture and the ensuing mini-controversy that it caused among her conservative followers, some may believe that she proved her point.

Megan looks really good! Not raunchy at all! The Republican party needs to stop eating their young. Have you seen the way Fox dresses their news women?! Go Independent Megan!

No amount of tweets can make the Republican party cool; especially not when they go bonkers over something as ridiculous as a girl in a tank top.
