Mel Gibson plays the part as older Boston police detective Thomas Craven trying to find out who the real killer of his young daughter Emma was (Bojana Novakovic) gunned down on the front porch of his home.
This modern day film is a diverse adaptation of the BBC television series also called "Edge of Darkness" shown in 1985. Released on January 29, 2010 in USA theaters.
Directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Michael Wearing, whom apparently knew how to "bring out the best of the extremely talented actor Mel Gibson" in his performance(s) during this truly remarkable film.
One of detective Cravens (Mel Gibson) famous sayings during the film is "Every thing's illegal in Massachusetts!" showing some comedy to this dramatic, suspenseful and sometimes soft touch violent film. "Be sure to get to all of your popcorn, drinks, candy and whatever you need at the theater concession stand before viewing this film on the big screen!".
Although, this film or (movie at 108 minutes) can be very complex regarding the story-line, and sometimes reminds you of Mel Gibson's 1999 film called "Payback". Each and every suspense minute of this film thriller is "well-worth, edge of your seat" viewing and carefully calculated to it's fullest extent from the film editor (Stuart Baird), meaning that if you miss a few minutes of the movie? You may lose focus of the plot or story?
Emma Craven's seemingly horrifying real screen "scared" boy friend David (Shawn Roberts) seems to make you more "nervous than you would like to be" simply because he's trying to hide out in his apartment from the "bad guys" whom are also trying to eventually kill him, (which they did) because him and Emma both knew too much about the company they were both working for called Northmoor.
However, both deadly in the end, found discovering that this illegal company is manufacturing nuclear weapons and selling them to foreign companies over-seas, thus, in return using them against U.S. soldiers during battle in these third world countries.
As usual? USA politicians are involved in this "heart-warming" and sometimes violent film, based of course on monetary politicians reasons trying to get rich quick at any cost? including murder?.
(For some strange reason? This film reminded of the famous movie called "Torn Curtain" a 1966 American political thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, because of it's fast moving film direction and story. Starring Paul Newman.
Most likely because of the suspense and where the director and plot is leading you into the very end and the fact that the film director is always showing "close-up dramatic facial" images of these incredible actors in history).
The greatest beauty of this film, is actor "Mel Gibson" and how he portrayed his incredible nowadays talent as a big screen theatrical actor. Never before has he shown so many dramatic "up-close and personal tears during a film", which was obviously needed because of the loss and horrible killing of his young daughter Emma, shown in and out as detective Cravens memory throughout the film as a child and an adult.
Mel Gibson still has the facial charm and beautiful smile in this 2010 film that has made him famous throughout his career, although he is gradually losing his hair and "put on a few pounds of weight". This is most likely the most dramatic part(s) Gibson has ever played on film so far. Even professional movie critics have ironically given this film an average rating of B, and viewers a B+, mostly because of the story and direction of filming.
